renaming to "permission checker" would be changing the meaning and scope, and should not be bundled with fixing the actual name - instead of "otrs-member" it should be "vrt-member" or whatever the migration group decides
This group does not mean any users with OTRS access; it actually means users with access to at least one permission-related queue.
I agree, the old name was confusing as the group was only applied to people having access to permission and photosub' queues. It is good to change this issue while renaming and "Permission checker" fixes this.
Usual process for renaming global groups is something like this:
This time we also have abuse filters to rename, they can likely all be found with the search-filters tool. Not sure what's the best approach to handle that.
@Zabe thanks, I forgot about this already being here.
@Majavah thank you for the steps, it's appreciated.
Change 686759 had a related patch set uploaded (by Zabe; author: Zabe):
[mediawiki/extensions/WikimediaMessages@master] Add messages for 'vrts-permissions' group
@Urbanecm volunteered to rename the group (https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:GlobalUsers/otrs-member) to vrts-permissions.
@Keegan: when the renaming can take place? Shall we fix it in our next meeting?
What should be the group label please? @Zabe proposed "VRTS-permissions", but that feels wrong.
FTR, I'm asking about the string displayed in Special:CentralAuth. For my account, it is:
This string will be sent to Translatewiki.net for translations. I feel "VRTS-permissions" would be hard to translate ("Permission VRT agents" would be much easier). This question doesn't affect the technical group name.
+1. I just copied the group name for now, but also would be more happy with some people related label.
I still need my question answered, and then we need to wait up to 2 weeks for the new messages to propagate (once the patch is merged).
The migration team concluded that "VRT permissions agents" should be the name of the global group, and if possible both the visible (translatewiki) text and also the technical wiki group name should be renamed.

So, this is now waiting for wmf.9 to be deployed to the wikis (scheduled to happen on 2021-06-10).
Worth user-notice IMO - the group name is used in abuse filters, and while I tried to inform affected wikis individually, I can never be sure I didn't miss something.
See https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia:Edit_filter/Requested&diff=prev&oldid=1028335352 for an example message I sent.

[mediawiki/extensions/WikimediaMessages@master] Remove messages for 'otrs-member' global group
Shall we change the name on Commons as well?
See https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/MediaWiki:Grouppage-OTRS-member
The idea would be to move the page to MediaWiki:Grouppage-VRT-member and to change the text to "Commons:Global VRT permission", right?
This is because OTRS-member usergroup was a local usergroup on commonswiki until late 2014. This page (as well as its subpages for translation) could be deleted as they are no longer needed.
