I have been planting out my dahlias this weekend and I thought I’d share the process.

1. I pot up the tubers in early April and grow them in pots in the greenhouse to get them started. I pinch out the growing tips of any that don’t throw up more than 3 stems.
2. I prepare their raised bed by adding my own compost in the Autumn.
3. I apply nematodes to this bed before planting them here. Nematodes help to stop them being eaten by slugs and snails.
4. I add bonemeal to the planting hole. I find dahlias enjoy the added phosphorus.
5. This raised bed is in a sunny spot that gets around 7 hours of sunshine a day.
6. Once planted, I add a copper ring which helps deter slugs and snails.
