In Greek and Roman sources, Tartessos designates a geographical area and a legendary kingdom that... more In Greek and Roman sources, Tartessos designates a geographical area and a legendary kingdom that flourished in the southwest of the Iberian Peninsula between the eighth and seventh centuries bce. For decades, much research on pre-Roman Iberia has gravitated around the nature of Tartessos as an historical or mythical polity, its possible location, and the archaeological identification of Tartessic material culture. It seems now increasingly clear that what the Greeks called Tartessos was inextricably linked to the presence of Phoenician culture in the area. It is thus only fitting that the first book about the subject to be published in English approaches the evidence with a special focus on patterns and phenomena of cultural and economic contact between the Phoenicians and the locals.

The Sumerian term sanga 2 , which refers to a purification priest, is commonly regarded as writte... more The Sumerian term sanga 2 , which refers to a purification priest, is commonly regarded as written with the sign LAK-175 in ED. 1 Ebla, however, seems to bear witness to a scribal tradition that distinguished between SANGA 2 and LAK-175 as two distinct signs (Civil 1984: 95). Nevertheless, in most third-millennium texts, SANGA 2 and LAK-175 can be considered as one and the same. 2 The difference in question can be seen if one compares LAK-175 to SANGA 2 as attested in the Ebla Sign List (Archi 1987: 106):

This hampers any conclusions on the state of animal husbandry at the site, crucial to the nature of the transition period.
