Edit-a-thon dedicated to International Museum Day
May 18 is International Museum Day. According to the established tradition, people visit various museums on the weekend following the Museum Day, which was impossible this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Wikimedia Armenia offered to the Wiki community and everyone to make virtual visits on May 17, the day before the International Museum Day, and to spend two days to create articles about museums and museum artifacts.
In two days, 20 members who participated in the edit-a-thon created 25 articles and two lists on museums in the world and museum artifacts.
A #1Lib1Ref to close the gender gap

Wikimedia Colombia was part of the webinar (in Spanish) "Let's make more visible to women in #1Lib1Ref". A campaign inviting to librarians from Latin America to join us including references specially to more women's biographies. We hope this effort rise awareness in the Colombian GLAM community to close Wikipedia gender gap.
#1Lib1Ref 2020 from 26 to 28 May in Côte d'Ivoire
Context
In order to continue to enrich the database of French-language articles despite COVID19, the association Wikimedia CIV in collaboration with AFLIA (African Library and Information Associations and Institutions) organized for three days the #1Lib1Ref 2020 100% online. This activity allowed librarians to learn a new method of conservation and improve content related to Africa.
Participants and activities
The workshops were held over a three-day period lasting two (2) hours per day.
- As participants, we have trained a total of 11 librarians from various backgrounds (Senegal, Cameroon, Algeria, Mali, Madagascar, etc.). As an activity, we focused on two main points:
- Introducing the wikipedia encyclopedia (the founding principles of Wikipedia; how to become a contributor and what are the different types of sources)
- How to add a reference to an article on Wikipedia.

The partnership between AAF (Association des archivistes français) and WMFr with VSA AAS and Wikimedia CH led this month to new live session. We had the pleasure to attend :
- An introduction to 1lib1ref by Fabricio Cardenas and Carole Renard the 7th.
- A presentation of Wikidata and Wikibase by Léa Lacroix, Nicolas Vigneron and Gilliane Kern the 14th
- A Sum of all Swiss GLAMs the 21st
- And training projects in Switzlerland.

Wikisource Competition 2020 recap
On April 27, 2020, Wikimedia Indonesia held a Wikisource contest to invite Wikimedia users in Indonesia and participate in proofreading some books that have already in public domain. Over 25 people registered to the event, yet only 17 of them were participating. The event lasted on May 15, 2020.
Two top contributors are invited to attend WikiNusantara 2020 in West Sumatra later this year.
The event run in 18 days, resulting estimated 1,880 pages proofread and validated. Five books were in Indonesian language and participants proofread the text in Indonesian Wikisource. Besides, there were three books provided in English, thus they should be proofread in English Wikisource. One of them was transcluded and can be read at Letters of a Javanese princess.
International Museum Day 2020
To commemorate International Museum Day 2020, Wikimedia Indonesia asked people on Twitter to share their stories when visiting museums in Indonesia. They required to choose one of their best memories of museum visits and tell us of why they had a memorable experience in that museum. Four best stories were chosen and awarded.

New collaborations and contents!
A whole website now for anyone at Accademia delle Scienze di Torino
Accademia delle Scienze di Torino, where Marco Chemello is working as Wikipedian in residence, freed the contents of thier whole website making them avalibable for all the wikimedians and the wider community. The Academy of Sciences of Turin, founded in 1757, is one of the most ancient and important scientific academies in Italy already active, and its contents are therefore most reliable sources. The GLAM project begun in March 2020, involving in the training sessions also members of other relevant istitutions in Turin.
New WiRs at the Museo Civico in Modena
Niccolò "Jaqen" Caranti and Adert kicked off a new collaboration between Wikimedia Italia and the Museo Civico di Modena; the collaboration will last till the end of September and produce new contents on Italian Wikipedia, Wikisource and Wikimedia Commons.
As a start the Wikipedians in Residence are teaching about Wikimedia projects to the staff of the museums, that is starting to contribute with new articles and images. Some events will also be organised (online and, if it will be possible, also offline). More information on the project page (in Italian).

Analysis of Dutch GLAM-Wiki projects in relation to the Dutch Digital Heritage Reference Architecture
In 2019, Wikimedia Nederland was approached with the question if the GLAM-Wiki process - cultural institutions contributing content to Wikimedia projects - can be analyzed in relation to the Dutch DERA (Digitaal Erfgoed Referentie Architectuur / Digital Heritage Reference Architecture) of the Dutch Digital Heritage Network. DERA is a reference architecture in the Dutch heritage sector, and aims to make heritage information in the Dutch Digital Heritage Network more visible for end users, using the principles of Linked Open Data. The DERA wiki (in Dutch) has detailed information about the various components of DERA.
In the past months, a small committee of staff and board members of Koninklijke Bibliotheek, Nederlands Instituut voor Beeld en Geluid and Wikimedia Nederland has started working on this analysis. The committee describes the relationship between (Dutch) GLAM-Wiki projects and DERA, an analysis based on several practical case studies:
- Description of a collection highlight from Koninklijke Bibliotheek (Album Amicorum by Jacob Heyblock) on Wikimedia projects
- Large-scale content uploads to Wikimedia Commons from the collections of Nationaal Archief
- Wikidata as supporting Linked Open Data at Netwerk Oorlogsbronnen
- Linked Data about (past) Dutch university professors on Wikidata: the Wiki-Wetenschappers project by the Dutch Foundation for Academic Heritage

Content donation from Utrecht Archives
Thanks to the help of dozens of Wikimedians, The Utrecht Archives are now able to upload all open-licensed images within their collection to Wikimedia Commons. These are more than 150,000 photos, illustrations and maps. "To make sure that the images will be easy to find on Wikimedia Commons, we have linked keywords from our archive to the categories on Wikimedia Commons, with the help of Wikimedians." tells Rick Companje, initiator and employee of the Utrecht Archives. "We have now started uploading the first batch. We start with the subcollection Railways because we know this collection is very popular. By sharing these images from our collection on Wikimedia Commons, we hope that even more people enjoy it and be able to use it in research and the online documentation of heritage". The upload itself will take weeks several and can be tracked via this category.
Article: Detecting Wikipedia articles strongly based on single library collections
In this article Olaf Janssen, the Wikimedia coordinator of the KB, the national library of the Netherlands, illustrates an approach to detect Wikipedia articles whose contents are fully or largely based on content from a single online source, such as a full-text digitized newspaper archive or a digital text library. Using Dutch Wikipedia he tracks down 247 articles that owe their existence to Delpher and DBNL, two full-text collections operated by the KB.
This approach might be relevant for GLAMs that have digital text collections used by the Wikipedia community for writing articles.
Collection highlights of the Koninklijke Bibliotheek (National library of the Netherlands)
Inspired by the work Andrew Lih has done for the Metropolitain Museum of Art and after attending his presentation at Wikidatacon 2019 the KB, the National library of the Netherlands, started a new project in which they focus on the accessibility and (re)usability of digital data and images of 72 collection highlights in their collection. These collection highlights range from medieval manuscripts, picture books, atlases and armorials to alba amicorum and magazines. Daniëlle Jansen will be ensuring that all the data, images and information will be findable and (re)usable in different file formats via wiki projects like Wikimedia Commons (including structured data), Wikidata and the English and Dutch language Wikipedia's.
On the website of the KB (kb.nl) it is now possible also to not only scroll through the full works of the collection hightlights but you will find a direct link to Wikimedia Commons in order to download all the images and texts seperately.

Free music on Wikipedia; NHB webinars; Wikipedia in libraries – Projekt HBTQI
Free music on Wikipedia
Wikimedia Sverige is at the start of a new project called Free Music on Wikipedia. The project is about making Swedish copyright-free music available on Wikimedia platforms and thus increasing the knowledge of older Swedish music to a broader public. Initial collaborative partners are Statens musikverk and music from the Swedish music archive called Svenskt visarkiv. This is mostly about older material and recordings that are in the public domain but we will also work with new recordings of older material.
There will be uploads of music files and how the works will be structured and described on Wikidata. In addition, a couple of edit-a-thons will also be implemented as the music also fits into articles. The possibility to listen to music when reading the article is one of the goals in this project. The majority of the project is financed by the Kulturbryggan and will run until 31 December 2020.
NHB webinars
While being working from home during the pandemic the National Heritage Board has been running a series of webinars to increase digital awareness and create learning material for the GLAM and education sector. Topics have been on how to record a short movie, how to cut a podcast, how to make OERs more useful and also on the project Wikimedia Sverige and Nordiska museet have been running to get students to write articles on Wikipedia.
Wikipedia in libraries – Projekt HBTQI
As a continuation of Wikipedia in the libraries, a HBTQI project (LGBT in English) has been started. There is a need to reschedule and do digital events as ordinary edit-a-thons are not possible to implement right now. Several of the planned Pride festivals have also had to cancel due to restrictions on the pandemic.
Within the project, a project page has been created similar to that found in other languages within the same theme. The project page is the platform where everyone can meet and post wishes on articles that can be written. Meetings have been held through video conferencing and two major edit-a-thons are scheduled for the fall. The purpose is simply to create and improve Wikipedia's content on topics related to HBTQI and to do this together. Feel free to join us in the project site!
International Museum Day 2020
IMD 2020: Cross-Chapter Collaboration
Wikimedia CH has been launching an awareness campaign for International Museum Day since 2018. The main objective was to create a scalable project, that could be implemented every year in order to raise awareness on both sides museums and voluntary community regarding the potential on content related to cultural institutions and free cultural knowledge. To visualize this potential we created a geographic map for Switzerland, connecting the Wikimedia projects content to geographically referenced museums, based on Wikidata records. Museums, having a Wikidata record but no Wikipedia article, for example, are marked with black symbols. Since 2018 we have expanded and scaled this project every year.
This year Wikimedia CH is happy to report our collaboration for IMD 2020 with the Wikimedia Chapters Germany, Austria, France and Italy as well as the support of ICOM International.
Our goal was to set a strong message more than ever due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Many museums were not allowed to open their doors for this year's Museum Day, many events have been cancelled. Despite the actual circumstances we wanted to give an impulse to support this initiative, then culture knows no borders and lives on virtually. Many museums have released high resolution images and information under an open access online, or organize virtual collection tours. Therefore, there are many ways to perform research and contribute to the Wikimedia projects, without physically visit a museum.
We have aligned our activities as follows:
- Elaborated an action plan for IMD2020
- Created a common project page
- Programmed a geographic map visualizing the museum landscape based on Wikidata records in Switzerland, Germany, Austria, France and Italy
- Launched a banner campaign in the respective countries during 2 weeks before IMD2020
- Organized a Wikidata Contest and set-up Outreach Dashboards
- Aligned our communication activities for press and social media including the key visuals in all the countries
- Consulted ICOM International regarding Creative Commons Licenses, accomplished the release of the communication material under CC BY-SA 4.0 International (Link) and set the basis for future collaboration
- Shared our activities and results with ICOM International and some of the national ICOM associations, as well as published a report on the blog / news page of ICOM International
Wikidata Contest for IMD 2020
Under the lead of Wikimedia Austria we have launched a Wikidata Contest for IMD2020, from May 3 to May 18, 2020. The main objective of the Wikidata competition was to improve meta data related to museums in Austria, France, Germany, Italy and Switzerland.

WMCH Map Service: New Release
Wikimedia CH has released an optimized and newly designed version of the WMCH Map Service timed with the IMD2020. Due to the popularity and acceptance of the WMCH Map Service and the expansion of projects across nations, the requirements have changed. To process a high amount of data and at the same time keeping the WMCH Map Service responsive enough, we needed to increase the performance. Therefore, together with our partner Synapta we had to implement a new library, which is compatible with the functionalities and the design of the tool and delivers the required response time for launching larger projects like the IMD2020.
With this release we have also implemented a historical database and feature to explore, how the map and content change over time. You can find this functionality under the button 'browse history'.
Japanese art
Khalili Collections
The Khalili partnership concentrated this month on improving articles relating to Japanese art and artists, using research resources provided by the Khalili Collections. Imperial Household Artist was expanded fivefold. Namikawa Sōsuke was expanded tenfold. Namikawa Yasuyuki expanded fivefold. New articles were created for the artist Yabu Meizan and for an art work, the Khalili Imperial Garniture. There were substantial additions to Japanese art, Japanese lacquerware, Japanese sculpture, Japanese pottery and porcelain, Japonisme, Meiji (era), and Ando Jubei.
Plácido Zuloaga has now passed DYK review, as has the Yabu Meizan article. Khalili Collection of Japanese Art also passed DYK review and appeared on the Main page on 28 May.
Just two new images were uploaded this month; we are still intending to return to bulk uploads in the future. Although the number of Khalili images on Wikipedia is relatively small (103 photos, 76 of which were added by this project), they are getting around 750,000 views per month.
Behind the scenes, we began work on a report on the first three months of the project to justify an extension beyond the current six-month pilot. Over the remaining three months of the pilot, we will focus on Swedish textiles, enamels of the world, and Aramaic documents.

Content partnership category - your help is needed
Background
Linked data becomes increasingly important in the world. In the Wikimedia movement it started many years ago with identifying Wikipedia articles about the same topic in different languages and connecting them all together (the In other languages section in de sidebar). Articles are also connected with the other platforms like Wikisource and Wikimedia Commons. In Wikidata all these topics are available and having them linked to many external databases and websites, and in Wikipedia authority control is available in articles to identify the topic on other databases and catalogues. Why this is important? Well, have you ever been to Singapore, Goiania/Guyana, Granada/Grenada, Sydney or Auckland/Oakland? Which one? From time to time it hit the news that people end up in the wrong place, see this article for some examples. As many subjects have the same or similar names, as well as pseudonyms, identifying the right one is needed. I digress a bit, back to the topic.
In many GLAM partnerships institutions donate images from their collections to be uploaded to Wikimedia Commons. On the file page of these images a template is added that says that the image was donated by the institution. This template adds automatically a tracking category so that all the images and other files donated by the institution itself are added to the same category. This Commons category often has as format Category:Images from <name institution> or something like that. (Many of these categories are added to Category:Files from content partnerships.) This tracking category is important for metrics purposes, like for example how many times images from an institution are used in articles.
To be clear, besides this automatic categorisation of the images in a tracking category that indicates they are donated by the institution, images also need to be categorised (manually) in various subject categories. Like for example by author and by type of work (paintings, drawings, prints, photographs, sculptures, ...).
Since 22 May 2020 we have on Wikidata a new property that makes it possible to identify which category on Wikimedia Commons is the official category in what images (and other files) are added that are donated by the institution itself. This property allows us to connect an institution to the files that come from it.
How can I help?
To be able to know which tracking category belongs to which institution, this (only once) needs to be manually added to Wikidata for each institution. There your help is needed.
- Go to the Wikidata item of an institution that donated images (and/or other files).
- Look up the tracking category on Wikimedia Commons in what all these donated images are present.
- Add this category name (without
Category:prefix) to the Wikidata item about the institution by using the propertycontent partnership category(P8252).

GLAM metadata standards and Wikimedia projects
GLAM metadata standards and Wikimedia projects
When cultural institutions (GLAMs) start collaborating with Wikimedians, and when they intend to upload files to Wikimedia Commons or contribute data to Wikidata, these institutions often ask how the data models used in their internal collection databases should be translated to Wikimedia platforms.
In order to help GLAMs and Wikimedians collect best practices for this, the Wikimedia Foundation's GLAM team has initiated a page on meta.wikimedia.org – GLAM/Metadata standards and Wikimedia – that provides an overview of the most-often used GLAM standards and how (if at all) they map to data models on Wikimedia projects. The overview focuses on Linked Open Data or structured data, i.e. cultural data on Wikidata and in structured data on Wikimedia Commons).
The list is certainly not complete. Please improve and extend the page, especially on widely-used metadata standards, and help keep it up to date.
In the future, this list can then also be used to prioritize GLAM metadata standards that need to be supported in improved tools for GLAM-Wiki projects: software for batch uploads to Wikidata and Wikimedia Commons, and software that supports metadata roundtripping between Wikimedia platforms and GLAM databases.
