I am an archaeologist specializing in the economic dynamics of the Mediterranean from the Roman period to the Early Middle Ages. My PhD, completed in December 2020 through a joint supervision between the University of Palermo and Aix-Marseille Université, focused on trade patterns and economic interactions between North Africa and Sicily, particularly examining African pottery from the 1st to the 7th century CE.
Currently, as a Marie Curie Postdoctoral Fellow on the FIRS (Frontiers Inside Roman Sicily) project, funded by the European Commission, I collaborate with the Center Camille Jullian at Aix-Marseille Université and the Department of Ancient Mediterranean and Near Eastern Studies at The University of British Columbia.
My academic career is distinguished by fellowships and awards such as:
- Resident Fellowship at the École française de Rome (2018)
- Fellowship at the DFG RomanIslam - Center for Comparative and Transcultural Studies (2022)
- Simon Keay Award in Mediterranean Archaeology at the British School at Rome (2023-24)
I have served as a seasonal lecturer at the University of Palermo and have collaborated internationally with research institutions across Europe and North America. I am an active peer reviewer for prominent journals and a member of the American Institute of Archaeology and the European Association of Archaeologists.
I also have significant experience in the private sector, where I applied my analytical skills to diverse projects, demonstrating flexibility and a capacity for professional growth. This experience has enriched my approach to archaeology by integrating practical problem-solving and innovative methodologies.
My expertise includes GIS for spatial analysis, archaeometry for ceramic material analysis, and artifact documentation. I am also focused on improving advanced IT approaches to archaeological data, with a commitment to enhancing their findability, accessibility, interoperability, and reusability both for humans and machines.
Since July 2024, I have been associated with the Centre for the Integration of Research, Teaching, and Learning at the University of British Columbia, where I am developing innovative learning approaches using active learning techniques and Universal Design for Learning (UDL).
