The case of music is considered in particular. The perceived temporality of contemporary technology is shown to be an artificial barrier to the acknowledgement of longer-term dynamics. The increased role of explanatory metaphors from technology is traced across various fields of study. Processes of sense-making-conscious or otherwise-are seen as an informal, unreflected repertory of mechanisms ranging from predictive models to instrumental metaphors. It is suggested that these derive by assimilation and induction from the technological milieu within which the subject develops and operates. The acquisition of these models and metaphors is itself an imaginative process, based on experience ranging from partial expertise to fantastical extrapolation.

It is—and continues to be—a tendency, a dynamic grouping energised by several drivers: a questionable need to quantify and valorise knowledge production across different fields, an understandable move to create parity among academic disciplines and institutions, and a visionary urge to expand our common understanding of the nature of knowledge. Most importantly it also embodies a sense on the part of artists that at this moment there is an urgent need to reflect coherently—to counter commodification and banalisation—and to communicate, to share, to find common cause and roles beyond differences [...

A sound-as-medium con- cept is implemented using an ALife wave model inhabited by an evolving population of sound- ing-listening agents. The work consists of layers of different wave phenomena, enacted by these agents. Listening within the system is considered important in the encouragement of emergence, as is the redescription of phenomena between different domains. In Speak, communication be- tween three domains – wavespace, performance space and symbol space – produces a complex hybrid dynamical system.

Two recent developments of the trumpet are discussed-the reinvention of the baroque trumpet and the author's design and use of a computer-extended trumpet (the metatrumpet)-to highlight issues of historical, personal and cultural authenticity. It is suggested that an appropriate understanding of the technology of a given culture is necessary for the "authentic" expression of that culture. Texts by Lyotard and Adorno illuminate an exploration of the nature and practice of contemporary music technology. The integration of subject and material, and the redefinition of the relationship between "composed" and "performed" time in music, are identified as essential and relevant properties of this technology. courts, a strong tradition developed.
