Jon is a philosopher and a researcher at Oregon State University. He is Principle Investigator of The Geometry of Learning which studies the effects of space and time on learning. Jon created a web-based philosophy course in 1994, InterQuest which he has taught in every term hence. He is OSU’s Immediate Past Faculty Senate President. In 1984 Jon received his Ph.D. in Philosophy and an MA in Psychology in 2019.

The influence of combined experiential learning through face-to-face instruction and immersive en... more The influence of combined experiential learning through face-to-face instruction and immersive environment (IE) on health behavior change has not been examined extensively. The goal of the WAVE∼Ripples for Change Childhood Obesity Prevention project was to determine the effectiveness of teaching nutrition and physical activity knowledge with an IE designed to reinforce these healthy behaviors (i.e. Rippleville), and if it could improve overall diet and physical activity. Participant engagement was crucial for the participant’s exposure to the decision-making process and data collection. This paper describes the strategies implemented in Rippleville to maximize participation and to engage a remote and scattered teenage population into an IE, including our mixed-reality models, as well as learning, engagement, and programming strategies.

ABSTRACT The objective of this article is to examine some of the valuable philosophical resources... more ABSTRACT The objective of this article is to examine some of the valuable philosophical resources available on the Internet, especially for librarians who need to determine what resources to provide to faculty, students, and staff. Some main uses of the Internet for philosophical research are: accessing texts, using search strategies to examine the texts, reading and writing electronic journal articles, accessing information from encyclopedias and dictionaries, browsing through paths of interlinked Web sites, searching the Internet for sources, and participating in online discussion forums. This article examines the Internet as a source of primary and secondary texts, journal literature, research databases, reference works, specialized limited area search engines, organizational information, and discussion lists. The article ends with a philosophical reflection on the transformative effect of information technology on the growth of knowledge.

A traditional model for a distance education course locates the bulk of the stu- dents at satelli... more A traditional model for a distance education course locates the bulk of the stu- dents at satellite campuses receiving electronically transmitted instruction from a teacher at a central location. Of course, that location is central only to the teacher and the handful of students able to attend class in the broadcast studio that serves as the classroom. This type of distance education helps bring educa- tion to students physically remote from the campus, but tends not to differ in presentation from the traditional classroom. A different distance education model incorporates the technological capa- bilities of the Internet and the World Wide Web, allowing radical changes in the level of interaction among students and teachers while staying true to course content. The WAVE project is an obesity prevention program that provides healthy teenage soccer players wi... more The WAVE project is an obesity prevention program that provides healthy teenage soccer players with a 2-year curriculum on basic food preparation, meal planning skills and physical activities. The long-term goal is for the active soccer player youth to adopt a sustainable healthy life-style. This project is coupled with a Immersive Learning Environment (ILE) called Rippleville developed using the OpenSimulator platform. We hypothesize that we may modify health practices through immersive simulation. In this paper, we present the strategies we applied to build Rippleville, in terms of learning objectives, immersive environment, engagement and programming as well as the current state of the project.

Dennet (1984) coined the term 'intuition pump' in criticism of philosophers who persuade without recourse to logical argument. Dennet associates intuition pumps with thought experiments, though the examples he gives include allegories, analogies, stories, metaphors, paradoxes, and puzzles. An analysis of these techniques shows that they include a broad range of cognitive and linguistic activities that operate in a variety of ways and leaves open the question whether they may be clustered under a single rhetorical category. Dennet's (1984) point is that some techniques affect persuasion by means other than rigorous deliberation and tend to supplant logical argument. Modeling Eating Behaviors through Mixed-Reality

Combining classroom activity, immersive environment simulation, and augmented reality we have pro... more Combining classroom activity, immersive environment simulation, and augmented reality we have produced a mixed-reality proof-of-concept. This mixed-reality system is designed to produce interventions in student eating behaviors toward healthier choices. Social-Cognitive Theory is the basis of the design. Enhancing perceived self-efficacy and vicarious learning are key objectives. The project raises a theoretical and design question about transferability of behaviors between domains.
