Likewise in other EU countries, also in Poland a large number of people experience homelessness. In particular, the growing number of long-term homeless people with complex mental problems, for whom effective help is a challenge for stakeholders, i.e. politicians, professionals, scientists and ordinary citizens, is worrying. An innovative solution in this areas is the Housing First (HF) program designed for long-term homeless people with mental problems and/or addictions. The effectiveness of the HF model were shown, among others, by the results of the HOME-EU research project implemented under the Horizon 2020 program. The goal of our article is to present the current situation of homeless people and outline the existing help system. Openness and communication between partners are key elements of dyadic coping with stress. Our main research question is: what is the impact of these factors on relational satisfaction in spouses struggling with infertility or miscarriage? In the current study, by applying the actor–partner interdependence model to 90 heterosexual couples (N = 180), we examined the link between the spouses’ openness (the Giessen Test), communication (Flexibility and Cohesion Evaluation Scales) and relationship satisfaction (the Marriage Success Scale). Controlling for relevant covariates (communication, own openness and type of stress experienced by the spouses: infertility or miscarriage), a dyadic analysis revealed significant actor (−0.24; p < 0.001) and partner effects (−0.20; p < 0.001). Introduction: Couples struggling with infertility, as well as those after experiencing a miscarriage, deal with many types of stressors, in the face of which they react with anxiety, regret and depression, which negatively affects fertility and is associated with an increased risk of miscarriage. The use of different coping strategies seems to have different effects on the stress of infertility and miscarriage experiences. The aim of the study was to investigate the relationship between depression related to infertility and miscarriage and satisfaction with family life, as well as the role of using the reframing in predicting family life satisfaction in the group of depressive infertile couples and after miscarriage. The immunomodulatory effects of a recently synthesized adamantane derivative of aminopyridine – 2-(1-adamantylamino)-6-methylpyridine (AdAMP) – were tested on normal and neoplastic cells in vitro. When incubated with TNF-α gene-transduced mouse melanoma cells (B78/TNF), AdAMP significantly enhanced basal production of TNF-α by these cells, both by "high" and "moderate" TNF-α-producer cells. A similar TNF-α production-enhancing effect was observed in cultures of human ovarian carcinoma cells (CAOV1) which spontaneously produce TNF-α but not in cultures of tumour cells incapable of TNF-α secretion. RT-PCR analysis showed that the enhancement of TNF-α production by AdAMP was associated with an increase in TNF-α mRNA expression in the treated cells. The results of an electrophoretic mobility shift assay (EMSA) showed that AdAMP significantly activated nuclear factor κB (NF-κB) in both CAOV1 and B78/TNF cells. The role of NF-κB in enhancement of TNF-α production was confirmed in experiments in which MG132, an inhibitor of NF-κB activation, reversed the effect of AdAMP. Unexpectedly, dexamethasone, a potent antiinflammatory agent and a strong inhibitor of TNF-α production in vivo, increased both spontaneous and AdAMP-augmented production of TNF-α in in vitro cultures of ovarian carcinoma cells and B78/TNF cells. AdAMP also enhanced TNF-α secretion by LPS-induced monocytes. AdAMP-induced augmentation of TNF-α production by B78/TNF cells was accompanied by morphological changes in the treated cells and a decrease in their adherence to fibrinogen and collagen IV. In view of these properties, AdAMP seems to be a therapeutically promising compound with potential application as an adjuvant augmenting the efficacy of cancer vaccine-based therapies or in the local treatment of certain tumours.

Two series of benzimidazole derivatives were sythesised. The first one was based on 5,6-dinitrobenzimidazole, the second one comprises 2-thioalkyl-and thioaryl-substituted modified benzimidazoles. Antibacterial and antiprotozoal activity of the newly obtained compounds was studied. Some thioalkyl derivatives showed remarkable activity against nosocomial strains of Stenotrophomonas malthophilia, and an activity comparable to that of metronidazole against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Of the tested compounds, 5,6-dichloro-2-(4-nitrobenzylthio)-benzimidazole showed the most distinct antiprotozoal activity.

Microwave-induced synthesis of O′-adamantyl derivatives of AZT, thymidine, 2′-deoxyuridine and uridine was investigated. Contrary to heterocyclus adamantylation of uracil and uridine in trifluoroacetic acid, the microwave-induced reaction provided sugar-substituted compounds.

Synaesthesia is considered here as a cognitive phenomenon in the context of developmental, neuropathological and linguistic perspectives. Developmental synaesthesia seems to arise as an effect of interplay between genotype and phenotype, during the implicit learning process in childhood, in those individuals who possess an inborn susceptibility to it. Some connections between synaesthesia and extraordinary experiences, brain restructuration and pain, are examined. Acquired types of synaesthesia may be related to sensory deprivation. The somatosensory cortex may be significant for cognitive synaesthesia, with especial importance placed on a mirror system. It is suggested here that synaesthesia might play a compensatory role during the sensorimotor stage of development. Linguistic-colour synaesthesia seems to be an abstract type of association that may characterize people with a hypersensitive colour perceptual system. In the present view synaesthesia may be seen as an effect of some deficiency that concerns double integrative processes.

Introduction. The aim of practicing martial art has always been self-recognition, the achievement of a specific state of mind and awareness, and the integration of the body and the mind. The aim of this study is to analyse attitudes towards combat sports and martial arts in non-training persons and to separate factors that might affect these attitudes. Material and methods. The study covered a group of 192 persons, 53% of whom were women, from three age groups: middle-school students (13-16 years), secondary-school students (16-19 years) and adults. The questionnaire of the attitude towards martial arts and combat sports consisted of three components: the cognitive component, the emotional component and the behavioural component. Results. The intention of practicing martial arts and combat sports significantly differentiates respondents in terms of attitude, particularly with regard to the cognitive component. Perceived as the dominant feature of martial arts and combat sports, brutality is the predictor of the negative attitude towards them. Conclusions. The popularisation of combat sports and martial arts should be based on the dissemination of knowledge, the encouragement of young people to participate in these sports and arts in various ways and the breaking of the stereotype of brutality of combat sports.
