The use of population censuses along with the 1966 plans by the Historic American Building Survey (HABS), serves to link the space under study with the fluctuation of inhabitants during four decades use. Under the comparative analysis of the information consulted, it is possible to demonstrate the levels of overcrowding inside the structures, according to the available domestic space and the divisions regarding public / private sphere. The use of demographic data pretends to bring a humanistic character to the analysis of decadence of the historical architectural heritage in colonial San Juan.

Fieldwork was carried out by a non-local cultural resources management company under contract with the United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE). Among the many concerns expressed by local archaeologists was the fact that the collection was taken to the United States for analysis. In 2013, the Jacanas collection was transferred to the Museo de Arte, Historia y Antropología, of the University of Puerto Rico, Rio Piedras campus. This paper will outline the transfer process of the Jácana’s collection using the records and documentation provided by the USCE to the Museum. This investigation aims to provide the general public with an understanding of what materials are available for future research projects.
