Monika Bisht is working as Research Associate with Institute for Research & Development in School Education, New Delhi. She has completed her M.Phil. and PhD from the National Institute of Educational Planning and Administration, New Delhi. Her PhD is on Diaspora Philanthropy in Higher Education. Her research analyses the impact of philanthropic contributions of NRI alumni on the development of their alma maters. Previously she was a part of India Centre for Migration, an autonomous research think-tank of Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India, where she looked into the matters related to labour migration policies of Colombo process countries. She is an Executive Committee member of the Global Research Forum on Diaspora and Transnationalism, an international research consortium on international migration and Diaspora. She has presented and published many research papers on issues related to education, philanthropy, labour, migration and diaspora.

These movies not only played key role in the identity politics in host countries but also played a significant role in articulating the middle class hegemonisation in the homeland. The present paper explores the inter-connectedness between the home-country and host-country and representation of diasporic identity in all major movies since 1980's. The study would understand the complex dynamics of the cultural politics and negotiation of identities in the transnational spaces.

Understanding the Challenges of Minority Communities in India: A Study of Educational Status of Muslims

Education is the single most important instrument for social and economic changes in any communit... more Education is the single most important instrument for social and economic changes in any community. India has a spectrum of religions, castes, classes and communities. The educational outcomes of each religion and communities are not the same, and thus, it raises the issues of the challenges of the education for such minority communities. This paper is concerned with the status of the Muslim minority in education. Muslims constitute the second largest religious group in India and the largest minority community. Despite having several schemes and initiatives for their educational development, Muslims in India are deprived, marginalised and educationally backward. Based on the secondary sources, the paper tries to understand the status, issues and challenges of Muslim education in India. It identifies the causes and factors affecting the low higher education of Muslims in India. It also studies the role of minority institutions for the higher education of Muslims. It further analyses the initiatives taken by the Government of India for their educational development.

The Tibetans in India are considered an exile diaspora having unique strategy in their adaptation... more The Tibetans in India are considered an exile diaspora having unique strategy in their adaptation and livelihood in the alien land. Challenges relating to their roots as well as to the existential socio-cultural and economic issues often make the Tibetan community unique. Based on both primary (qualitative observation) and secondary (existing literature) sources of data, the paper tries to map out various patterns and ways of social networking and livelihood promotion of Tibetan communities in Delhi. The paper tries to investigate how the Tibetans mobilise their economic capital through social networking. The social capital plays a very important role in the economic life of the Tibetans. Unlike natives, they have no established source of livelihood or access to public services owing to their refugee status. However, due to strong social networking, they are able to engage in informal economic activities. Occupations such as handicrafts, carpet making, woollen-making, traditional arteries, ethnic food-costumes and ornaments businesses, travel and restaurant business etc. are the major sources for their livelihood. They face socio-economic and political deprivation in the absence of legal as well as other benefits that the permanent citizens are entitled to.
