Adam C Gastineau
I teach regularly as a Sessional Staff Member at the Australian Defense Force Academy, UNSW Canberra, and am now looking to move into work in public policy. I have contributed several short pieces to an introductory textbook on Just War Theory, and am a co-author of the National Security College Occasional Paper ‘Cybersecurity: Mapping the Ethical Terrain’.
My area of specialization is Applied Ethics; specifically Police and Military Ethics. I completed my Master of Philosophy (MPhil) with the Centre for Moral, Social, and Political Theory at Australian National University in 2016. Prior to coming to CMSPT I was a Research Assistant with the Centre for Applied Philosophy and Public Ethics and received an MA in Public and Applied Ethics (MA(PAE) (Hons)) from CAPPE ANU. My past research focuses primarily on the balance between state or political power and individual rights, with a focus on Grey Zone/Irregular Conflict.
I have also presented papers on the moral boundaries of police discretion, permissible use of lethal force, the problem of 'dirty-hands' and noble-cause corruption in policing, and the limits of legitimate cyber-surveillance in liberal democracies. I have also written on ethical issues pertaining to professional duty of care, and targeted killing.
Supervisors: Seth Lazar, Christian Barry, Nicholas Southwood, and Scott Wisor
