Photographer David Burdeny, whose photo of a towering iceberg we featured last month, has been working on another large-scale photography project. "Salt Works" is a new photo book by Tom Hegen, which features aerial photos of salt mines around the world.

Bright pond pockets of color are caused by micro-algae living within them. The varities in each pond are determined by their tolerance to salinity, & the colors are reactions to salt levels. Ponds cover an array of hues from bright green, where low salinity green algae grows, to a coral pink or red hue algae from high salt. Tiny brine shrimp cast an orange sheen. Weather affects the colors, but their ever-changing pigments always stand out from the sky, & are a visual marker for astronauts.

This session is a continuation of my project to take baseline photographs of the current landscape in the Eden Landing Ecological Reserve’s Phase II project area. This next phase of salt pond restoration is located just south of Phase I, incorporating the area between Old Alameda Creek and the Alameda Creek Flood Control Channel.
