Hydraulic jumps are used as an energy dissipater, allowing excess energy from downstream flow to ... more Hydraulic jumps are used as an energy dissipater, allowing excess energy from downstream flow to be dissipated through hydraulic structures, preventing scouring. Channel roughness is also necessary for good flow control, as it allows more excess energy to be dissipated downstream. To better understand the impact of channel roughness on dissipating energy in an open channel, this study investigates and compares the energy dissipation of hydraulic jumps based on roughened (gravel size 20mm) horizontal and sloping channel bed condition. The experiment was carried out in the Hydraulics Laboratory, Department of Civil Engineering, NIT Manipur (India) in a rectangular channel flume (16 m length, 0.6 m wide, and 0.8 m deep). The characteristics of hydraulic jumps (length of jump, upstream and downstream head, velocities, and subsequent depth ratio) were measured and using these characteristics, the amounts of energy dissipation are calculated. Results show that the sloping channel bed is much safer for the structure, dissipates more energy, and the control of the flow is much easier as compared to the horizontal condition. Thus, it can be suggested that sloping channel bed is an effective channel bed condition when energy dissipation is the main purpose. The experimental results were numerically simulated using CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) techniques and found to be within an acceptable range.

Hydraulic jump on different channel characteristics (horizontal smooth & rough and sloping smooth & rough) were analysed. The measured characteristics of hydraulic jump with different channel roughness and different slope were compared. The results showed that the sequent depth ratio (y2/y1 ) increases with the increase in Froude number (Fr1 ) for smooth horizontal bed and horizontal rough bed. It was also observed that with an increase in Fr1 , a decrease in y2/y1 in smooth sloping bed condition and decreases for rough sloping bed. New empirical relationships were also developed with the experimental data and results were found similar with the observed hydraulic characteristics data.

Also, the hydraulic jump is an energy dissipater for dissipating the excess energy of flow in the downstream through spillways, gates, weirs, dams, and other hydraulic structures, and it also helps to prevent scouring in gates and spillways. The precise selection of gates is very important for effective control of flow in the channel, to guarantee safety of the structure, easy to operate, economical, easy to maintain and to dissipate excess energy downstream. This study examines the characteristics of hydraulic jumps (a comparison of Sluice gate and Radial gate) and energy dissipation in hydraulic jumps experimentally. The experimentation was performed in a channel flume with a rectangular cross section (16 m long, 0.6 m wide and 0.8 m deep) in the Hydraulics Laboratory, Department of Civil Engineering, NIT Manipur. A sluice gate and radial gate are used in the channel to generate a hydraulic jump at the downstream of the flow. The characteristics of hydraulic jumps, such as length of jump, upstream and downstream head, velocity, sequent depth ratio, and amount of energy dissipated, etc., were measured with different heights of gate opening and flow rate. The results show that the Radial gate is much safer for the structure, dissipates more energy, and the control of the flow is much easier as compared to the Sluice gate, and can be considered as an appropriate model for dissipating energy.
