This is a fantastic activity that can be an extension to the “The very hungry little caterpillar”, one of our favorite books. How it works: Paper towels are made of ground-up plant material. If you look through a microscope at a torn-up piece of paper (or look up some images on the Internet), you will see a web of tiny plant fibers. Magnifying your paper further will reveal that the fibers are made of long chains of linked sugar molecules, called cellulose. Water is attracted to cellulose and likes to be soaked up and stick to the cellulose in paper. Capillary action allows the colors from the markers to walk across the paper towel to form a rainbow .

Tips to make this experiment successful-
1. Use only washable i.e water soluble color markers , permanent markers will not work
2. Color the ends very nicely for it to work
3. Keep the water cups closer to each other
4. Take only half length if paper , it makes the rainbow faster

SHARE if with your friends because this science experiment is going to amaze your kids !!

I started out by colouring rainbows on either end of a strip of kitchen towel using our @crayola_uk super tips. We then put the coloured ends of the kitchen towel into two small glasses of water, and watched the ink rise up the paper. Jessica loved watching this. Jessica was then keen to create her own patterns on the paper towel, and she repeated t Liquid Paper, Paper Tower, Rainbow Experiment, Rainbow Activities, After School Club, Rainbow Painting, Nursery School, Rainbow Paper, Towel Colors
