Marita Giménez-Candela
Marita Giménez-Candela (PhD with Prof. Alvaro d’Ors, Spain, and Habilitation with Prof. Dieter Nörr, Germany) is a Professor of Law since 1986 at the Universitat de les Illes Balears and since 1997 at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB), with a long career in teaching and research. She has received many prices and international distinctions. She is a Humboldt Scholar and Visiting Professor at many Universities across the world (Kyoto, Fukuoka, Tokyo, NYU, Cologne, Munich, Paris-Sorbonne, Napoli, Roma La Sapienza, Roma “Tor Vergata”, Deutsches Archäologisches Institut, UNAM, Querétaro and Michoacán in México, Cochabamba in Bolivia, Abu Dhabi, Hong Kong, China).
She has lectured in Spanish, French, German, Italian and English in many Universities and Research Instituts. Has published an important number of articles, papers and books about Animal Law and Roman Law. She introduced Animal Law in Spain. Is member and Founder of Scientifical Comitees and Legal Societies. Founder and Chief Editor of the www.derechoanimal.info website, which is the first legal website for animals in Europe with an exhaustive database.
She is currently (2023-until now) the Founder and Editor in Chief of the DALPS (DerechoAnimal-Animal Legal and Policy) https://dalps.tirant.com/index.php/dalps/index. She is as well the Founder and Editor in Chief of the OJS, peer reviewed and indexed journal of Animal Law: “dA. Derecho Animal (Forum of Animal Law Studies) https://revistes.uab.cat/da/index (2009-2022). Since 2007 she introduced the optional course “Animal Law and Animal Welfare Law” which is oficially part of the Study Plan for the Law Degree at the Law School of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. In 2009 she established, and has since managed until 2022 both the onsite and online Master in Animal Law and Society at the UAB (=Autonomous University of Barcelona), which is a pioneer initiative in Europe.
She was the Director of ICALP (International Center for Animal Law and Policy) 2015-2022. She manages two Collections of Books on “Animals and the Law”: the one published by “Tirant Lo Blanch” with 12 volums published and two more in print and the other one published by the Servei de Publicacions de la UAB with eight volums recently published and two more in print.
She has supervised Doctoral Theses, managed competitive Research Projects, has organized International Conferences (between them the II Global Animal Law Conference in Barcelona, 2014 and the III Global Animal Law in Hong Kong, 2018), and has been a President of ANECA Commission and a magistrate for the High Court of Justice of Catalonia.
