democracy’ has emerged as a trademark in Turkish politics, focusing
on cosmopolitanism and European integration. In the late 2000s,
the party’s favourite notion was ‘advanced democracy’, this time
underlining Turkey’s leadership claim in the region and displaying
a more critical approach to ‘Europe’. In this paper, I aim to show how
different narratives on ‘Europe’ emerged within the context of these
empty signifiers. The paper claims that the difference in the two
narratives on ‘Europe’ in two different periods does not point to a
complete and fully fledged de-Europeanisation trend.

applying the poststructuralist theoretical framework of Laclau and Mouffe to the analysis of the shifting discourses on ‘Europe’ in Turkey after 1999, the paper identifies the different ways in which the concept has shaped domestic political debates and the
political struggle detectable in the utterances of key political elites. I call this phase, ‘Europe-as-hegemony’. The overall claim is that a hegemonic approach permits us to see the changing landscape of the Turkish discourse in terms of a political struggle over ‘Europe’ and, finally, how ‘Europe-as-hegemony’ vanishes after 2005."

Taking this as a departure point, this volume focuses on football as a realm of constructing and negotiating identities using rich ethnographic fieldwork and in-depth media analysis.

Departing from this close link between the formation of Turkish national identity and ‘encounter with Europe’ in terms of football, the chapter aims to examine the Turkish national identity representations vis-à-vis European identity in two different events, Euro2008 and Euro2012, where the Turkish team was able to qualify in the former, but not in the latter. Through a qualitative analysis of the country’s media, the chapter claims that although ‘Turkishness’ has predominantly been constructed during Euro2012 vis-à-vis ‘Europeanness’, this construction did not depict ‘Europe’ as the radical Other of Turkish national identity.
