Problems from previous years

Are the problems seen in previous years going to occur again? Without looking back at previous threads, I can recall the following:

• photos added to articles that already had that exact photo
• photos added at the very top of articles when they should be either in the infobox or in a relevant section
• irrelevant photos added to articles
• cryptic edit summaries - #WPWP is no good, it must at the very least link to a page about the campaign
• users not responding to messages on their talk pages

Hi, Redrose64, we are aware of these (and more) problems from the previous editions and have put measures in place to prevent recurrence. So no, they'll not recur, hopefully.

All the first three points you listed are generally as a result of inexperience or guileless incompetence because the campaign allowed everybody to participate with lax restrictions. You can find our detailed campaign evaluation report about that here. One of the changes we made this year to remedy that is we have revised the eligibility criteria to participate. We now require users be around much longer (before the campaign round starts) and by that to hopefully have the basic experience with wikitext/image syntaxes and local project policies that will allow them comply with the campaign and local project rules around their onwiki edits and actions. We believe this measure (along with the other changes we made) will help prevent most of the problems you listed and the ones you didn't as well as make the campaign more successful overall.

We take note of the edit summary issue and would encourage better alternative this year. Experienced users already are aware they have the latitude to use more descriptive edit summary in this regard. While the hashtag is required for the campaign for various reason, it's not required to be the only text in the summary. The tool that analyzes it allows it to be in the beginning, in the middle or at the end of a running text, not necessarily to be used alone. On the issue of linking, please note, the hashtag is meant for a tool to analyze, not humans to read. So we will encourage alternatives such as the one use for #WikiForHumanRights or #1Lib1ref campaigns where normal descriptive summary encouraged by the local community should be used, and the hashtag inserted somewhere in the text.

On the issue of communication with users, this is also closely tied with the main problem of inexperience. Generally new users struggle with talkpage communication and this is not peculiar to this campaign. We hope the raised bar for eligibility to participate would remedy this issue. If experienced users are not responding to issues raised on their talk-page, then that's a local behavior problem with the user and we believe extant local guidelines would be able to resolve that, whether it pertains to this campaign or not. – Ammarpad (talk) 09:55, 1 June 2022 (UTC)
