Endangered languages

edit

I like the link you just added for the NEH and NSF grant awards, it contains a list of serious people involved in recording and documenting endangered languages. Would be nice if we could contact at least some of them and convince them to release their documentation in a free license. That may be something we can look at through Wikimedia Indigenous Languages, what do you think ? Amqui (talk) 04:32, 29 August 2012 (UTC)Reply

Yes, this sounds like something the developers at the Foundation would want to be involved with. Djembayz (talk)

Changes to WMDE's proposal to the FDC

edit

Hi, User:Djembayz: Thanks a lot for taking the time to review WMDE's FDC proposal so carefully. We keep a close lock on changes to the proposal after the proposal deadline, and so while I think your edits were good, I've reverted them since only the entity is allowed to request changes and all of those changes have to be approved by Staff if they are made after that deadline. We know this is quite different from the usual wiki process, so I wanted to post a note to you here to let you know the reason for the revert and at the same time to appreciate your efforts. Letter petitioning WMF to reverse recent decitions

edit

The Wikimedia Foundation recently created a new feature, "superprotect" status. The purpose is to prevent pages from being edited by elected administrators -- but permitting WMF staff to edit them. It has been put to use in only one case: to protect the deployment of the Media Viewer software on German Wikipedia, in defiance of a clear decision of that community to disable the feature by default, unless users decide to enable it.

If you oppose these actions, please add your name to this letter. If you know non-Wikimedians who support our vision for the free sharing of knowledge, and would like to add their names to the list, please ask them to sign an identical version of the letter on change.org.

I'm notifying you because you participated in one of several relevant discussions. -Pete F (talk) 22:04, 20 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

Can I rename Category:Gender_gap_grant_ideas?

edit

Hi Djembayz. Thanks for creating Category:Gender_gap_grant_ideas. It is very useful for the upcoming Inspire campaign to have all the existing gender-gap-related ideas already categorized. I hadn't noticed that you had done this, and I just created Category:IdeaLab/Ideas/Gender_gap to serve the same purpose. Would it be okay with you if I re-direct your category there? I have two motivations: 1) perpetuate my existing naming scheme to make life easier for my bots, templates, and gadgets; and 2)make sure people know that IdeaLab ideas aren't grant proposals. Let me know if you have any concerns with this proposal, and thanks again for going through the existing ideas and categorizing them. Cheers, Jmorgan (WMF) (talk) 01:19, 13 February 2015 (UTC)Reply

Great, Djembayz. I've re-categorized the ideas and redirected the category. Thanks again for categorizing them. Cheers, Jmorgan (WMF) (talk) 00:25, 14 February 2015 (UTC)Reply

Community discussion on harassment reporting

edit

There are many current proposals as part of the 2015 Inspire Campaign related to harassment management. I’ve created a page, Grants:IdeaLab/Community discussion on harassment reporting meant to serve as a central space where the various stakeholders in these proposals and other community members can discuss which methods might serve our community best so that we can unify our ideas into collective action. I encourage you to join the conversation and contribute your ideas! OR drohowa (talk) 01:11, 22 April 2015 (UTC)Reply

Category:Family-friendly meetups

edit

I'm not sure we need to have this category - aren't all meetups family-friendly? Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 20:06, 25 April 2015 (UTC)Reply

Some establishments in the US require you to be age 21 ... do you use the "all ages welcome" terminology in your parts instead? --Djembayz (talk) 21:44, 25 April 2015 (UTC)Reply
It sounds like it's different in the US than the UK. Most UK pubs are 'family-friendly' (or "all ages welcome") at the times when UK meetups take place, so all UK meetups are family-friendly. I'll recategorised them into Category:Wikimedia meetups in the UK, which is a subcat of your category. Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 21:42, 7 May 2015 (UTC)Reply

Hello, what did you mean by Category:Family participation in this grant page? Spiritia 11:21, 5 May 2015 (UTC)Reply

Hello, Spiritia! As you know, there is a stereotype about Wikipedia editors: the editors tend to be men who are "geeky," who have poor social skills, who spend all their time on their computers, who may not be very clean and presentable in public, etc. Although naturally not everyone who edits here is like that, the editors who do fit that stereotype of "computer-nerds" could certainly benefit from some friendly social contact with their fellow editors, instead of experiencing social rejection. The least we can do is express appreciation for the important work done by people who may be working on Wikipedia because their experiences in real-life social situations have been difficult or painful.
I would like to encourage Wikipedia editors to meet each other in real life, and to have more family-oriented social events that welcome their families, friends, and personal supporters. I believe we can become a friendlier place if people get to know each other in person and establish friendships. While we are busy editing, other people are growing our food, caring for our families, and keeping the electric power plants running that power our computers.
Wikipedia is everywhere, and it widely used by children. I was pleased to find a Wikipedia event like yours that would be of interest to families and children, and I hope we will see more of them. Family people are an important part of the mix. --Djembayz (talk) 13:54, 7 May 2015 (UTC)Reply

You're invited to the Ally Skills Workshop at Wikimania!

edit

Thank you for contributing to the grant request for training Wikipedia admins to be more aware of sexism! This grant has been approved in pilot form, and the Ada Initiative is running an Ally Skills Workshop at Wikimania 2015. This workshop will focus on teaching specific skills and techniques directly relevant to Wikipedia admins and editors, and in particular will teach people about the psychology of trolls. The workshop will be on Thursday July 16 from 2pm to 5pm in Don Diego 3.

If you are attending Wikimania, you are invited to apply to the Ally Skills Workshop! Space is limited and we may not be able to accept all applications, so apply now. More information, including a link to the application form, is here:

Ally Skills Workshop description and application form

People of all genders are welcome to attend. Unfortunately, travel scholarships for Wikimania are already closed and we don't know of any other sources of travel funding. If you know anyone else attending Wikimania who might be interested in attending this workshop, please encourage them to apply!

Thank you for your time,

Valerie Aurora (Instructor and Interim Executive Director of the Ada Initiative)

Question on partnerships terms and conditions

Inspire Campaign on content curation & review

edit

I've recently launched an Inspire Campaign to encourage new ideas focusing on content review and curation in Wikimedia projects. Wikimedia volunteers collaboratively manage vast repositories of knowledge, and we’re looking for your ideas about how to manage that knowledge to make it more meaningful and accessible. We invite you to participate and submit ideas, so please get involved today! The campaign runs until March 28th.

All proposals are welcome - research projects, technical solutions, community organizing and outreach initiatives, or something completely new! Funding is available from the Wikimedia Foundation for projects that need financial support. Constructive feedback on ideas is welcome - your skills and experience can help bring someone else’s project to life. Join us at the Inspire Campaign to improve review and curation tasks so that we can make our content more meaningful and accessible! I JethroBT (WMF) 05:39, 29 February 2016 (UTC)Reply

Open Call for Individual Engagement Grants

edit

Greetings! The Individual Engagement Grants (IEG) program is accepting proposals until April 12th to fund new tools, research, outreach efforts, and other experiments that enhance the work of Wikimedia volunteers. Whether you need a small or large amount of funds (up to $30,000 USD), IEGs can support you and your team’s project development time in addition to project expenses such as materials, travel, and rental space.

With thanks, I JethroBT (WMF), Community Resources 15:56, 31 March 2016 (UTC)Reply

Through June, we’re organizing an Inspire Campaign to encourage and support new ideas focusing on addressing harassment toward Wikimedia contributors. The 2015 Harassment Survey has shown evidence that harassment in various forms - name calling, threats, discrimination, stalking, and impersonation, among others - is pervasive. Available methods and systems to deal with harassment are also considered to be ineffective. These behaviors are clearly harmful, and in addition, many individuals who experience or witness harassment participate less in Wikimedia projects or stop contributing entirely.

Proposals in any language are welcome during the campaign - research projects, technical solutions, community organizing and outreach initiatives, or something completely new! Funding is available from the Wikimedia Foundation for projects that need financial support. Constructive feedback on ideas is appreciated, and collaboration is encouraged - your skills and experience may help bring someone else’s project to life. Join us at the Inspire Campaign so that we can work together to develop ideas around this important and difficult issue. With thanks,

Invitation to participate in Universal Code of Conduct survey - WikiWomen's User Group

edit

(You are receiving this message as you signed your interest to participate as part of the WikiWomen's User Group)

Hello, my name is Mervat Salman, a UCoC Facilitator, Trust and Safety team.

As you know, the WMF Board of Trustees ratified the Universal Code of Conduct early in February. That's the beginning; the policy itself cannot be used if the enforcement pathways are not defined. The implementation and enforcement of the UCoC requires the continuous cooperation to define clear definitions of enforcement pathways and processes. This needs to be done in a way that does not contradict with the internal bylaws and codes of conduct currently in place, but rather to support them and complement their deficiencies, if any.

In this phase of the process, we would like to invite you to share your ideas, thoughts and concerns about the UCoC implementation, reporting and enforcement pathways using this survey:

Notice: This survey will be conducted via a third-party service, which may subject it to additional terms. For more information on privacy and data-handling, see the survey privacy statement <https://foundation.wikimedia.org/wiki/UCoC_Affiliates_Survey_Privacy_Statement>.

Should you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact [email protected].

Best regards,

Mervat (WMF) 17:00, 9 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
