AT THE MARKET

Preston Market is the second largest market in Melbourne selling fresh produce, clothing and homewares with a variety of restaurants and food stalls; it attracts over 80,000 visitors per week. The market opened in 1970, however, its long-term survival is in jeopardy as the new owners plan to redevelop the site, wishing to build high rise apartment blocks on the site.

PRAHRAN MARKET

Melbourne's oldest produce market, Prahran Market is open 5 days a week (Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday) for quality produce and friendly service. Prahran Market is Australia's oldest continuously running food market, proudly being in operation since 1864.

Located in bustling South Yarra (163-185 Commercial Road South Yarra), Prahran Market is easy to get to by train, tram, bus, car (parking is easy), bike or foot! The traders here offer the widest choice to their customers including heirloom produce and hard to find specialties, cheeses, smallgoods, artisan products, certified organic fruit and vegetables, beef, pork, poultry and game. Not to mention fresh sustainable fish, seafood, shellfish and crustaceans.

As it's getting closer to Halloween, pumpkins are everywhere, even though they are expensive imports (remember we have Spring here in Melbourne).

AT THE QUEEN VIC

The Queen Victoria Market (also known colloquially as Vic Market or Queen Vic) is a major landmark in the central business district (CBD) of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. Covering over seven hectares (17 acres), it is the largest open air market in the Southern Hemisphere. Constructed in stages from the 1860s and officially opened in 1878, the Queen Victoria Market is the last remaining major market in the CBD, and along with Prahran Market and South Melbourne Market, the last of the city's Victorian era markets still operating. It is listed on both the Victorian Heritage Register and the National Heritage List, and is one of Melbourne's major tourist sites, attracting approximately 10 million visitors annually.

ROSE ST MARKET, FITZROY

The Rose St Market in Fitzroy is an Artists' Market that offers a wide variety of art and craft, usually sold by the makers themselves. It is good to wander through, have a chat with artists and buy some delightful creations.

LOTS OF THOUGHTS

At the T&T market today someone was selling old pennies. On 14 February 1966, Australians woke to a brand-new currency. The decision to change from the Australian pound (with its awkward shillings and pence) to a decimal currency – the Australian dollar – was a pragmatic, economic one. Yet decimalisation became an opportunity for Australia to assert itself as an increasingly self-assured and forward-thinking country. The conversion was also a major logistical and public relations triumph...

AT THE STH MELBOURNE MARKET

Established in 1867, South Melbourne Market is the quintessential village market, a place where people come not only to purchase fresh food, but to meet, eat, drink, shop, discover, share and connect. Open every Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 8am.

Each aisle is full of authentic traders who display their wares with pride and passion. Quirky and playful characters are found behind the counters, delivering old fashioned customer service with a smile.

COBURG SUNDAY MARKET

Now that the Melbourne Lockdown is essentially over, life has returned to the "COVID-Normal" level, with most open air activities being free to take place. After many many weeks of being closed, the Coburg Drive-In Trash and Treasure Market has opened and has attracted large numbers of people who are after bargains and Christmas shopping... We visited the market this Sunday and like most sensible people had our face masks on and took the necessary precautions with hand sanitisers, etc. Always fun to have a wander around here, and even if one buys nothing, the people-watching is worth the trip.

AT THE MARKET

At the Latrobe University Sunday Market, which had been closed for a few months due to the Lockdown. Even after more that three weeks without a COVID-19 case or death in Victoria, we are still wearing masks everywhere and there are still quite a few restrictions to adhere to. Tomorrow, we shall be allowed to not wear masks outside, provided we can practice social distancing; while we still are required to wear masks inside shops, halls, shopping centres, indoor public gatherings.
