  1. Workshop of Cesare Nebbia and Giovanni Guerra

    Council of Nicaea

    Italy (1585-1589)

Salone Sistino, Vatican Palace, Vatican City.

Pope Sixtus V Peretti added the Salone Sistino, along with two other rooms, to the already existing Vatican library, begun by Pope Nicholas V. The decorative program of the hall glorifies the achievements of Sixtus V, particularly his architectural projects, and depicts the nine famous libraries of the world, the inventors of language, the founders of religion, and the sixteen ecumenical councils from Nicaea to Trent.
