Furthermore, most studies in the field sought to explain the transformation of the teachers through interventions. Therefore, drawing on the underpinnings of transformative learning theory proposed by Mezirow, this study aims to investigate how the three EFL teachers have changed since starting their research careers. Unlike most of the studies in the literature, this study aims to find out the transformation of the participants as researchers with no specific intervention. This is a qualitative study, and the data were collected online through semistructured interviews. In order to see if the participants went through the stages suggested by the theory, the recorded interviews were analyzed deductively. The results revealed that despite not following a linear order, the participants pass through all the suggested stages. The participants were found to pass through transformation at distinct stages, and how they changed was presented under the steps of the theory. Overall, this study sheds light on the longitudinal development of researchers initiated by a disruptive event, which is followed by iterative reflections which leads to the feeling of confidence in their researcher identities.

A mixed-methods research design was employed in the study, so the data were collected through both quantitative (questionnaires) and qualitative (interviews) instruments. The data for the quantitative part of the study were collected by means of the “Teachers Questionnaire” prepared by Vogt & Tsagari (2014) under three domains regarding language testing and assessment (LTA); classroom-focused LTA, purposes of testing and content and concepts of LTA. The data from questionnaires were analyzed via SPSS in terms of means, percentages, and frequencies to find out the training levels and needs of the respondents in language assessment. In the qualitative phase, a total of 18 teachers volunteered to take part in the interviews. The qualitative data that was g...

In order to examine their process of teacher learning in online settings, we drew on Self-Determination Theory (Deci & Ryan, 2012) regarding the motivation as to how they engage and learn in the course of online professional development. An exploratory approach was adopted based on the interviews, and the motivational factors of the participants together with how they exploit technology were presented in three different cases. The study revealed that all the teachers were intrinsically motivated, and the need for developing competence, exercising autonomy, and assessing relatedness were key motivational reasons behind their online professional learning. Instagram, MOOCs, YouTube and websites were the online sources mentioned by the participants when th...

This research attempted to see how using a wiki page in a writing lesson could affect students’ success. The research lasted for two months. Each week, students handed in an assignment, either as a hard copy or online. Data was collected using two different instruments. First of all, Pre and post questionnaires were applied in order to see the student’s attitudes towards the use of internet for educational purposes specifically for writing lesson and peer edit. Besides this, the midterm results of the students, which served as a determiner for success, were analyzed by dependent samples t-test. Results showed that there was not a significant difference in the results of the two groups in terms of their grades, besides this, the percentage of the students who thought wiki was a valuable source for a writing class in the pre-questionnaire decreased in ...

Firstly, the relationship between the time students spend on social media and the time they spend socializing face-to-face with friends in real life was tried to uncover. Secondly, the researcher wanted to see if gender is a factor in the amount of time students spend on social media or socializing face-to-face with friends in the real world. Data were collected from a preparatory school at a state university in Istanbul through a questionnaire. Sixty-nine B1 level students (46 males, 23 females) were included in this study. All of the participants were aged between 18 and 20. This is quantitative research, and a survey method was adopted. In order to analyze the data, firstly, descriptive statistics were analyzed, and a Kolmogorov-Smirnov test was implemented. As none of the data was normally distributed, a non-parametric test was conducted to see the correlation between time spent on social media and time spent with friends. The correlation b...

The effect of using visual aids in cloze tests testing grammar at B1 level: A quasi-experimental study, 2020

Visuals have been used in test format for years, as well; however, there is a dearth of research to indicate how effective the presence and the type of visuals in testing grammar through multiple-choice cloze tests. To close the gap in the literature, the current study aims to identify the effect of using visual aids, specifically real pictures, diagrams, and no pictures in a cloze test on students’ grades and test completion times. This is a quasi-experimental, quantitative study. The data was collected through cloze tests that tested grammar via multiple-choice items within a context about synesthesia. The sample consisted of 64 B1 level preparatory school students (27 females, 37 males) studying at a state university in Istanbul. The participants were from different majors. The data were analyzed through SPSS. The results revealed a significant difference between the visual types and students’ completion time of the texts. It took different groups between 2 minutes to 7 minutes to complete the test. The real picture group spent the most time (M= 4.45), which was followed by the diagram group (M= 3.47) and no visual test group (M=3.45). However, no significant differences were found between the grades of the students who took tests with different visuals.
