We merge skeleton data streams from multiplesensors to compensate for occlusions of the performer. The skeleton jointpositions drive the performance via open sound control data. We discuss how toregister the different sensors to each other and how to smoothly merge theresulting data streams and how to map position data in a general framework tothe live electronics applied to a chamber music ensemble.

In this article the technical background as well as the artistic ideas of the " Turing Test for D... more In this article the technical background as well as the artistic ideas of the " Turing Test for Dancers " are described, a performance project by Johannes Kretz for the Festival " Making New Waves 2009 " in Budapest. The performance took place in two rooms with audience simultaneously, which were connected through network technology. The main idea for both rooms is to explore the interaction between the virtual remote presence of a dancer being far away and another dancer being present on stage.

The European concept of representing and thinking music as notes in a score guides and limits wha... more The European concept of representing and thinking music as notes in a score guides and limits what can be expressed by music. Computer music on one hand (especially when inspired by ethno-musicological sources) and contemporary experimental DJing on the other hand both suggest the extension of this paradigm and affect the way, how music can be performed, on stage and even over the Internet. This paper presents the authors experiences in developing new computer models of sound articulation partly by analyzing field recordings of the songs of Taiwanese aborigines, partly by integrating contemporary experimental DJing techniques. In Kopfjägergesänge (head hunter songs) for piano, DJ and two laptop performers the author created a sound language connecting these two musical worlds by focusing on questions of sound articulation. Furthermore tools for capturing this articulation from field recordings and for applying the captured parameters on other sound material will be presented as well as software, which allows DJing over Internet in the frame of Georg Hajdu's Quintet.net environment. 1. Field research In summer 2005 during a research travel 1 of three weeks I could visit several of the indigenous tribes in Taiwan and record and study their music as well as the still very strong connection between daily and ritual live on one hand and singing on the other. Those tribes (of which some used to be head hunters in old times) all have a strong cultural identity and amazingly different singing styles, varying from triadic homophony of the Bunun tribe to the microtonal clusters of the Yami on Lan Yu Island, (see figure 1). Figure 1: The distribution of the aborigines of Taiwan island The main attention of the research was to capture and analyze especially this information contained in the singing, which cannot be notated in western score notation. Figure 2 shows a song from the Yami tribe, as women there typically sing it. The pentatonic pitch organization (as notated below the pitch curve) can be clearly perceived even though much pitch deviation in the form of numerous micro-glissandi and ornaments as well as vibrato creates a rich world of subtle pitch articulation, which is at least as important as the underlying pentatonic " pitch skeleton " .

Computer music on one hand (especially when inspired by ethno-musicological sources) and contemporary experimental performing and improvisation on the other hand suggest the extension of this paradigm and affect the way, how music can be performed. This paper presents the authors experiences in connecting field work on Taiwanese aboriginal music and developing new computer models of sound articulation by analyzing these field recordings of the songs of Taiwanese indigenous peoples like Tao (Yami), Bunun, Ami, Paiwan and others. From the beginning the research included many aspects: using the methods of ethnomusicology to gain knowledge, developing strategies of applied ethnomusicology and finally: capturing and analyzing musical information contained in the singing, which cannot be notated in traditional western score notation to apply it to western instruments through the means of live electronics in order to enrich their potential of sound articulation in this way. In " ponso no tao " (" island of human beings "), a composition for piano and electronics, Johannes Kretz created a complex sound language connecting these musical worlds, the Taiwanese singing styles and the western contemporary music style by focusing on questions of sound articulation and fusion of different ways to shape and organize music and sound. Furthermore tools for capturing this articulation from field recordings and for applying the captured parameters on other sound material will be presented. This paper summarizes the authors experiences in developing tools for generating and performing s... more This paper summarizes the authors experiences in developing tools for generating and performing sounds with computers using concepts, which strongly extend the traditional concept of " notes in a score ". The software environment KLANGPILOT allows to describe and formalize musical ideas in a language, which is both, close enough to traditional concepts to support an efficient creative process, and rich enough to allow the creation of (mainly synthetic) sounds with unusual, sophisticated spectral properties. Also some links between high level control of sound synthesis and computer aided composition are highlighted. Finally a way of playing back sounds is described, which provides a compromise between the safety of recorded tapes and the temporal flexibility of real time technology.

KLANGPILOT – A SOFTWARE AND A NEW PARADIGM FOR WRITING SOUND

The creation of music with electronics is still, in some sense, in a state similar to "oral cultu... more The creation of music with electronics is still, in some sense, in a state similar to "oral culture". The articulation of an expressive vocabulary, which cannot be represented well by the traditional music score, often forces composers to use confusing or vague verbal descriptions and/or the distribution of inhomogeneous performance material, like a paper score plus digital media. Both verbal descriptions and mixed performance material lack standardization. This makes the creative process difficult and performances nearly impossible to pull off without the composer's presence. The software KLANGPILOT by Johannes Kretz and Adam Siska is an environment for sound synthesis, but it is also meant as a contribution to bridge the methodical gap between traditional score writing and the creation of electronic sounds. It provides an intuitive interface for representing spectral properties of sound in a way as close as possible to traditional score writing.
