Particular attention is provided to the renewable energy sector and to the Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs). It emerges that most of the literature is focused on big companies and little attention is paid to the renewable energy sector. It emerges that some organizations, especially in the oil industry, are seen as leaders in KM practice. On the other hand, SMEs operating in the renewable energy industry are not aware of the relevance of KAM and then do not address explicitly KAM initiatives or projects. The research reveals that small firms do indeed manage knowledge assets informally as part of their normal activities, without using the terminology and concepts of knowledge management discipline.

The proposed Regional Innovation Capacity Model (RICM) can be used for interpretative and normative purposes to analyse the innovation dynamics taking place at regional and territorial level. From an interpretative point of view, the model identifies the pillars grounding the innovation capacity of a local system. While, from a normative perspective, the model can inspire the definition of guidelines driving the design and the implementation of actions, projects and programmes aimed to stimulate and sustain regional development dynamics. The RICM adopts a knowledge-based perspective assuming that IC, in the forms of regional knowledge assets, and knowledge dynamics, in the form of knowledge transfer and learning processes, are the drivers of innovative processes and outputs. The chapter concludes proposing a future research agenda. www.igi-global.com/article/using-an-online-data-portal-and-prototype-analysis-tools-in-aninvestigation-of-spatial-livability-planning/176682?camid=4v1a The Effect of Google Data Centers on City Competitiveness Jacqueline Bueno Sousa (2012). The papers published in journals in the range 1997-2019 are analysed to derive insights and implications about the role of social innovation for local development according to a knowledge-based perspective. The analysis of the literature highlights the lack of a homogenous investigation of the relationships between social innovation and knowledge-based local development. However, findings show the growing importance of the theme and underline some relevant research streams: 1) Dynamics of social innovation for territorial development; 2) Promoting participatory development processes for interactive learning, networking and knowledge exchange; and 3) The role of institutions to promote, sustain and develop knowledge-based territorial development systems. The paper concludes with a discussion of the open questions for future research.

A concept that captures holistically the relevance of this kind of resources on regional socio-economy is Intellectual Capital (IC). This work proposes a multidimensional perspective of regional development based on the notion of value creation. Using Robust Canonical Analysis (RCA) with data of the Italian Regions, the relationship between ownership and use of IC and regional development is demonstrated empirically.

In this introduction to the special issue some conceptual interpretations are developed to investigate IC‐based approaches, methods, tools and factors of companies' performance improvement.Design/methodology/approachThe approaches, evidences and insights discussed in this introduction are largely based on the discussion of the topics of the conference “International Forum on Knowledge Assets Dynamics” organized in June 2007 in Matera, Italy. At this conference, leading experts discussed the importance of IC for organizational performance improvement, the IC key‐value drivers of the performance management and measurement, and theoretical concepts of, and practical approaches towards, a high‐performing IC management.FindingsThe outcomes of this introduction and of all the contributions to the special issue reflect the current discussion about better operationalization of IC management constructs. This discussion is largely focused on the importance of space for IC management activities, on the main knowledge assets that drive companies' processes improvement, the diversity of the relative relevance of each knowledge asset and the necessity for strategic and managerial decision‐makers to learn to apply general approaches, methodologies and instruments in specific companies. In this context, managing IC was mostly dealt with as a means to reach performance targets.Originality/valueThis introduction as well as all the contributions to the special issue deal with different aspects, which are important in the discussion of needs for a better understanding of the relationships between IC management and companies' performance improvement as well as the approaches, tools, methods and techniques to better disentangle the mechanisms by which knowledge assets, separately or interdependently, contribute to improve companies' organizational performance.
