Daniar Mutalâp
I am working as a Junior Researcher in the Philology and Literary Language department from "Iorgu Iordan - Alexandru Rosetti" Institute of Linguistics and I am currently a PhD student at The Faculty of Letters (University of Bucharest). My thesis revolves around the study and the edition of "The Romanian Philokalia from 1769" (Romanian Academy Library Ms. No. 2597). My main focus is the study of the mystico-ascetical manuscript miscellanies in old Romanian literature.

The analysis points out that the composition of the two codices is unique within the old Romanian culture. Both of them contain the Psalter, the Odes, the Akathistos Hymn and the Paraklesis to the Theotokos. Similar manuscripts had been already circulating in the Slavic world, and one of them was also known to the monks of the Bisericani Monastery (Neamţ county), the place where MSS 540 and 170 had been copied. In fact, hierodeacon Arsenie, one of the scribes of MS 540, bought a Slavic codex of this kind in 1617.
The thourough analysis of the graphological features brings forth the fact that MS 540 was created by Arsenie and two other monks from Bisericani. Furthermore, we have managed to determine that one of the scribes of MS 540 was Călin, the same person who independently wrote MS 170.
The composition of the manuscripts corresponds to specific liturgical practices followed by the monks of Bisericani Monastery between the 16th century and the end of the 18th century.
