This thesis examines the interpretive effect of exclamatives on bare singular (count) nouns in Greek. Bare singulars are analyzed as instances of pseudo-incorporation. (1) I Merula ehi kani plastiki s'afton. DET Merula has made plastic.surgery at.him '(Wow!) Mary has had a lot of plastic surgeries in his clinic!' Using Zanuttini & Portner's (2003) analysis of exclamatives, I argue that the 'high quantity' effect is derived as a pragmatic inference from the two distinct components of exclamative meaning (i.e., factivity and widening). My analysis shows that a number neutral interpretation of bare singulars surfaces invariably only in exclamatives. Yet, I show that a non-atomic reading can be licensed in declaratives/assertions, too. Finally, I show that Greek pseudo-incorporated nouns in exclamatives standardly support anaphora and are not subject to lexical restrictions. These findings have significant implications for semantic theories of (pseudo-)incorporation.

Werkstuk over de iconografie en stijl van de drie sacramentstorens uit Bad Doberan, Rostock en Lübeck in Noord-Duitsland. Centraal binnen dit onderzoek staat hierbij de vraag naar een eventuele diepere betekenis van de iconografische thema’s van de voorstellingen en waarom deze werden aangebracht op een sacramentstoren.

In this essay the nature of Egyptian satire is examined, as may be derived from the three so-called satirical papyri dating to the Late Ramesside Period. Analysed is what the drawings represent by giving an detailed overview of the vignettes and questioned is if they can be linked to contemporary literature. In addition, studied is the motive behind these papyri: could there be a connection between the satirical papyri and the social disintegration of the latter part of the Twentieth Dynasty? Furthermore, evaluated is if our modern Western definition of satire is applicable on the ancient comic papyri.

This article discusses an epigram by Diodorus of Sardis (Diodorus 1 ed. Gow and Page or AP 9.219), in which a return to Rome of someone called Nero is compared with Neoptolemus' voyage to Troy. Although the epigram seems to be praising, it also contains subversive elements. The exemplum of Neoptolemus' voyage to Troy is problematic, since the goal of his voyage is to capture the city. Not only can Neoptolemus' role in the fall of Troy be seen negatively from a Roman perspective, but it also suggests that Nero's return to Rome is dangerous for the city as well. Moreover, the mythical connection between Troy and Rome suggests that the Greek conquest of Troy can be seen as a conquest of proto-Rome. Finally, by connecting apparent praise of Nero to the word θύω ("to rage"), Nero is placed further in a negative light. This article analyses these elements with a focus on the cultural tension between Greece and Rome, and subsequently argues that the poem resists, in its own way, Roman domination.

A historical introduction to Thomas Naogeorgus's play 'Iudas Iscariotes' (1552) explores the different historical and cultural contexts the play participates in. After the introduction, a short commentary to the end of the first act and the first choral ode is presented.

In this paper, I argue that Greekness was a main characteristic of (some of) the Anacreontics at some stage of their ancient reception, alongside wine, love and revel.
First, I point out the proximity between Anacreont. 8 and 4 West, which justifies reading them together and arriving at common conclusions for both poems. Then, Aulus Gellius provides us with a context in which these characteristics become apparent, the division of social activities according to cultural identity.

This paper has a threefold goal: first, to offer a clear and factual account of Constans II’s aduentus; second, to compare his visit to previous aduentus (changes in the balance of powers inside the City will become apparent); and last but not least, to analyse how this aduentus is used in both the Liber pontificalis and Paul the Deacon's Historia Langobardorum to exert Kaiserkritik against a Byzantine emperor from a Petrine perspective.
