Victor Starov, PhD, DSc, Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry, Professor. Victor Starov is a Professor at the Department of Chemical Engineering, Loughborough University, UK since 1999. He got his PhD from USSR Academy of Sciences in 1970 in capillary hysteresis in porous bodies. He got his DSc degree form Sankt Petersburg University in 1981 in Equilibrium and kinetics of thin liquid layers in dispersed systems. Victor Starov is working on influence of surface forces on kinetics of wetting and spreading on solid and soft solids, kinetics of spreading over porous and hydrophobic surfaces. Prof Starov published more than 300 scientific papers. Some of his research results summarised in a book V Starov, M Velarde, C Radke “Wetting and Spreading Dynamics”. Participated in organisation of a number of scientific meetings all over the world and was a chairman of European Conference ECIC XVII in 2005 at Loughborough. Member of Editorial Board of more than 10 Journals including Advances in Colloid and interface Science, Current Opinion in Colloid and Interface Science, Colloid and Interface Science Communications, Desalination.

The applications of DBS have been well developed in different area, such as, newborn screening, preclinical test, pharmacokinetic (PK), toxicokinetic (TK) and therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM). The process of dried blood spots (DBS) sampling involves simultaneous spreading and penetration into a porous filter paper with subsequent evaporation and drying. The spreading/imbibition kinetic of blood, which is a non-Newtonian fluid, over different porous substrate is investigated from both experimental and theoretical points of view.

A survey of recent literature on wetting phenomena reveals that there is a fast-growing interest ... more A survey of recent literature on wetting phenomena reveals that there is a fast-growing interest in wetting of soft or deformable substrates, due to its potential applications in many industrial, technical and biological processes. Unlike rigid substrates, a droplet deposited on a soft substrate deforms the substrate via a combination of the normal component of surface tension and the Laplace pressure, i.e. by capillary force and the action of disjoining pressure. In turn, the capillary and disjoining pressure-induced substrate deformation affects the wetting phenomena on the substrate. In this review, we summarize recent achievements on static and dynamic wetting of soft substrates and provide an outlook to future progress. In static wetting, theoretical, numerical and experimental investigations of capillary and disjoining pressure-induced substrate deformation are introduced, and corresponding effects on contact angle and contact angle hysteresis are discussed. In dynamic wetting, the influence of substrate stiffness on spontaneous wetting, droplet impact dynamics, and other types of forced wetting and dewetting is considered. Finally, other interesting capillarity-controlled phenomena occurring on soft and softlike substrates are briefly introduced.
