This paper reports on our experience in using OMNeT++ to develop a network simulator focused on r... more This paper reports on our experience in using OMNeT++ to develop a network simulator focused on railway environments. Common design problems are analyzed, making emphasis on radio communication models. Scalability issues are raised when modeling the large topologies that are associated with railway communications. Our conclusions point out that model reusability must be reinforced and that a component-based design must be adopted in order to build a tool for generating valuable performance results.

ABSTRACT In order to evaluate the performance and estimate the resource usage of peer-to-peer bac... more ABSTRACT In order to evaluate the performance and estimate the resource usage of peer-to-peer backup systems, it is important to analyze the time they spend in storing, retrieving and keeping the redundancy of the stored files. The analysis of such systems is difficult due to the random behavior of the peers and the variations of network conditions. Simulations provide a unique means for reproducing such varying conditions in a controlled way. In this paper we describe a general meta-model for peer-to-peer backup systems and a tool-chain, based on SimGrid, to help in their analysis. We validated the meta-model and tool-chain through the analysis of a common scenario, and verified that they can be used, for example, for retrieving the relations between the storage size, the saved data fragment sizes and the induced network workload.

In order to study the performance of scheduling algorithms, simulators of parallel and distribute... more In order to study the performance of scheduling algorithms, simulators of parallel and distributed applications need accurate models of the application's behavior during execution. For this purpose, traces of low-level events collected during the actual execution of real applications are needed. Collecting such traces is a difficult task due to the timing, to the interference of instrumentation code, and to the storage and transfer of the collected data. To address this problem we propose a comprehensive software architecture, which instruments the application's executables, gather hierarchically the traces, and post-process them in order to feed simulation models. We designed it to be scalable, modular and extensible.

Abstract, This paper describes work in progress to initi-ate the collaborative development of a n... more Abstract, This paper describes work in progress to initi-ate the collaborative development of a new software plat-form for discrete-event simulation studies, the Open Sim-ulation Architecture (OSA). OSA is primarily intended to be a federating platform for the simulation commu-nity: it is designed to favour the integration of new or existing contributions at every level of its architecture. The platform core supports discrete-event simulation en-gine(s) built on top of the ObjectWeb Consortium&#x27;s Fractal component model. In OSA, the systems to be simulated are modeled and instrumented using Fractal components. Fractal components o er many advanced and original fea-tures, such as multi-programming language support and the ability to share sub-components. In OSA, the event handling is mostly hidden in the controller part of the components, which alleviates noticeably the modeling pro-cess, but also ease the replacement of any part of the sim-ulation engine. Apart the simulation engine, OSA aims at integrating useful tools for modeling, developing, exper-imenting and analysing simulations. For this purpose it relies on the Eclipse development platform and its ability to be extended.

ABSTRACT Reproducibility of experiments is the pillar of a rigorous scientific approach. However,... more ABSTRACT Reproducibility of experiments is the pillar of a rigorous scientific approach. However, simulation-based experiments often fail to meet this fundamental requirement. In this paper, we first revisit the definition of reproducibility in the context of simulation. Then, we give a comprehensive review of issues that make this highly desirable feature so difficult to obtain. Given that experimental (in-silico) science is only one of the many applications of simulation, our analysis also explores the needs and benefits of providing the simulation reproducibility property for other kinds of applications. Coming back to scientific applications, we give a few examples of solutions proposed for solving the above issues. Finally, going one step beyond reproducibility, we also discuss in our conclusion the notion of traceability and its potential use in order to improve the simulation methodology.

In recent years, numerous applications have been deployed into mobile devices. However, until now... more In recent years, numerous applications have been deployed into mobile devices. However, until now, there have been no attempts to run simulations on handheld devices. We want investigate different architectures for running and managing simulations on handheld devices, and putting the simulation services in the Cloud. We propose a hybrid simulation and visualization approach, where a dedicated mobile application is running on the client side and the RISE simulation server is hosted in the Cloud. In particular, with our prototype, we explore the remote management of a simulation tool using a dedicated native application running on an Android Smartphone, and showing the evolution of a simulation model for a forest fire spread, mashing-up the generated graphics with online GIS services.

A vast majority of the current research on telecommunication networks relies on computational too... more A vast majority of the current research on telecommunication networks relies on computational tools and computerbased experiments, among which the simulation techniques and tools take a prominent place. This special issue aims at presenting a selected number of papers that illustrate and emphasize this importance of such software tools and techniques. This is also an invitation for the readers to shift focus from the research results to the research process itself. Indeed, telecom research extensively relies on experimental techniques and tools. Therefore, and despite its strong theoretical foundations, this research should also be considered as a highly experimental exercise. As such, and similar to other "older" experimental sciences, we believe that particular attention should be paid also to the experimental process, and to the techniques and tools used to produce research results.
