As more and more traditional mechanical solutions in modern machinery are being improved or repla... more As more and more traditional mechanical solutions in modern machinery are being improved or replaced by mechatronics solutions, the size and complexity of the systems are also increasing. Under the circumstances, separating design-in-the-large and design-in-the-small becomes essential. A promising approach to achieve this goal is architecture-based evolutionary and top-down system development. However, in the process, lower-level implementation information is still necessary to bridge the semantic gap between system architecture and system implementation. Forming software into larger software component provides a means to facilitate this work and to achieve code reuse as well. In this paper, we introduce the system characteristics and provide a survey on the real-time software components specified by notable research approaches. This work will form the basis for a complete component framework for the real-time software in an autonomous mobile vehicle in the future.
In this paper, we describe a concept for the automatic allocation of general Safety Integrity Lev... more In this paper, we describe a concept for the automatic allocation of general Safety Integrity Levels (SILs) to subsystems and components of complex hierarchical networked architectures that deliver sets of safety critical functions. The concept is generic and can be adapted to facilitate the safety engineering approach defined in several standards that employ the concept of integrity or assurance levels including ISO 26262, the emerging automotive safety standard. SIL allocation is facilitated by HiP-HOPS, an automated safety analysis tool, and can be performed in the context of development using EAST-ADL2, an automotive architecture description language. The process rationalizes complex risk allocation and leads to optimal/economic allocation of SILs.

This paper proposes a vehicular control system architecture that supports selfconfiguration. The ... more This paper proposes a vehicular control system architecture that supports selfconfiguration. The architecture is based on dynamic mapping of processes and services to resources to meet the challenges of future demanding use-scenarios in which systems must be flexible to exhibit context-aware behaviour and to permit customization. The architecture comprises a number of low-level services that will provide the required system functionalities, which include automatic discovery and incorporation of new devices, self-optimisation to best-use the processing, storage and communication resources available, and self-diagnostics. The benefits and challenges of dynamic configuration and the automatic inclusion of users' Consumer Electronic (CE) devices are briefly discussed and the self-management and control-theoretic technologies that will be used are described in outline. A number of generic use-cases have been identified, each with several specific use-case scenarios. To demonstrate the extent of the flexible reconfiguration facilitated by the architecture, some of these use-cases are described, each exemplifying a different aspect of dynamic reconfiguration.

System modelling based on an Architecture Description Language (ADL) is a way to keep these assets within one information structure. This paper presents the EAST-ADL2 modelling language, developed in the ITEA EAST-EEA project and further enhanced in the ATESST project (www.atesst.org). EAST-ADL2 supports comprehensive model-based development of embedded systems and provides dedicated constructs to facilitate variability and product line management, requirements engineering, representation of functional as well as software/hardware solutions, and timing and safety analysis.

ABSTRACT EAST-ADL is an Architecture Description Language (ADL) initially defined in several Euro... more ABSTRACT EAST-ADL is an Architecture Description Language (ADL) initially defined in several European-funded research projects and subsequently refined and aligned with the more recent AUTOSAR automotive standard. It provides a comprehensive approach for defining automotive electronic systems through an information model that captures engineering information in a standardized form. Aspects covered include vehicle features, requirements, analysis functions, software and hardware components, and communication. The representation of the system’s implementation is not defined in EAST-ADL itself but by AUTOSAR. However, traceability is supported from EAST-ADL’s lower abstraction levels to the implementation level elements in AUTOSAR. In this chapter, the authors describe EAST-ADL in detail, show how it relates to AUTOSAR as well as other significant automotive standards, and present current research work on using EAST-ADL in the context of fully-electric vehicles, the functional safety standard ISO 26262, and for multi-objective optimization.

System modeling based on an Architecture Description Language (ADL) is a way to keep these assets within one information structure. The original EAST-ADL was developed in the EAST-EEA project (www.east-eea.org) and basic concepts were reused in the AUTOSAR standardization initiative. The original EAST-ADL is currently refined in the ATESST project (www.atesst.org) to EAST-ADL2.
