The idea was to some up with a creative way of creating a scale with 11 values from black to white and everything in between. The human eye can only see 44 different values in between black and white. Apparently the most a person has ever created without using a computer is 12. Here are 11.

A great way to teach value. A white highlight that gradually tints into a color as it expands from the subject. 7th Grade Art, 8th Grade Art, Middle School Art Projects, Art Lessons Middle School, 6th Grade Art, 4th Grade Art, 5th Grade Art, Value In Art, Elementary Art Projects

For some reason I find it easiest to teach value by going paint, then crayon, then colored pencil then graphite. So we start with paint. Official definition of Value (tone, tint, shade...) "refers to the use of light and dark, shade and highlight, in an artwork." Middle school definition of value..."this is hard, why do we have to do this....I want to do something fun!" Ah teaching value at a more advanced level can be a pain in the butt. I find younger students are perfectly happy to learn…
