Principles of design

T he elements of art are the basic elements used by artists when creating art; they are what one uses to create an aesthetically pleasing work.

Planning how to teach Principles of Design to your students can be challenging. I cover teaching the Principles of Designs in many different ways in my art curriculum. Here’s some of my favorites.

You think you know something, but then you realize you might not know it as well as you first thought! I was working on a bulletin board and wanted to make sure I wasn't leaving any of the Principles of Design out. When I googled it...the ones listed weren't exactly what I was thinking. So what are the real Principles of Design? What do you use in your classroom? For the Principles of Design I did balance, contrast, emphasis, movement, pattern, and rhythm. The hardest I thought was rhythm because you had to combine movement and pattern together.

Appreciating architecture is closely related to the knowledge of principles of design. Complicated as they sound, under the guidance of dedicated lessons children quickly recognise the aesthetic values of architecture. Building upon the lessons, children can benefit from the knowledge to get to know art at a later stage.

Emphasis is shown here by centering the focus of the piece. It also makes the umbrella pop by using bright colors compared to the others shown. This is also the only umbrella where the viewer can see part of the persons face.
