The contributors (who are academics, psychoanalysts, or both) engage with topics relevant to Italy and its culture ranging from Boccaccio to Titian, early-twentieth-century Italian literature, the city of Rome, Eco, the translation of Freud into Italian, and the significance of multilingualism in the analytic session.
The theoretical and clinical framework is informed by contemporary psychoanalytic authors including Winnicott, Bion, Meltzer, Kristeva, Matte Blanco, and Lacan.

Through a series of textual comparisons, I will also show how Calvino kept reflecting about Pavese's suicide for decades after the event. In this connection, I will also show that Calvino implicitly associated Pavese's suicide with problems involving a key function of the mind: the dispositif that Racamier was to call subsequently «primal mourning».

Particular attention is paid to the consequences that the shift from Freudian unipersonal psychoanalysis (still the most common reference point in the sphere of literary studies), to the radically different intersubjective model of post-Bionian origin, has for the intersection between psychoanalysis, literary criticism, and literature.
