glancing back ~ april

Blue skies and sunshine.  That is story the photos tell.  It's just not the whole story!

It was a typical west coast April...where we knew had to take advantage of the sunshine because it could be raining again shortly.  But we are closing off the month with a string of beautiful days...and the temp's are soaring.

Let me just share a few of the month's happenings.  On a sunny Sunday afternoon, we took a drive out to Point Roberts.

Though it is just over an hour's drive from here, we had never before visited this jewel of a place along the ocean.  It's a little slice of  the USA on the Tsawwassen peninsula...accessible only through Canada. It seemed most of the vehicles in Point Roberts sported a BC license plate. Since there is much to share about Point Bob...I am breaking my one-post-a-month-for-now policy and doing a separate post on our day trip over there.  (You can scroll down and find it immediately below this post...or click here.)

And then there was Easter!  We celebrated with the family on Good Friday this year...because that was what worked best for all. (It didn't work out all that well for Spencer though, who missed out on all the fun because of the flu!)

We timed it just right and had an Easter egg hunt outdoors between rainfalls!  As for the eggs that never got found that day...I'm finding them now as I do my gardening.

On the Saturday of the Easter weekend...we grabbed our passports and headed back to the ocean on the American side once again...not all that far from Point Roberts.

Our destination was Blaine...and a beautiful wedding at the Semiahmhoo Resort.  Once again...the rain stopped just in time!  Mikki and Joe were married in an outdoor ceremony along the ocean.  We rejoiced with those who were rejoicing...at the marriage celebration of the daughter of our long-time friends. Most special!

In other news...

...the weeping willow tree next to our house is gone!  I could weep over that...but I won't.  It is for the best...I know!  We planted two willow trees on the front yard ten years ago...when we built the house.  The one nearest the house grew twice as fast as the other.  A healthy specimen indeed!  One month ago we realized that the roots of the healthy tree were winding their way through the drainage pipes around the house.  Water was backing up where it shouldn't be.   What to do?  Hubby brought the chain saw and that was that!  There is now a stump where the lovely tree once stood.  I'm still trying to decide how to best hide the eye-sore...and what to plant where the tree once stood.  Take note ~ weeping willow trees are not supposed to be planted within 100 feet of drainage or septic pipes.

Our annual trip to the tulip fields never happened this year.  It wasn't for lack of trying!  We piled into the car and began our drive out there one afternoon, only to realize the tulip fields closed at 4 o'clock and we were too late.  It's hard juggling schedules and school hours to fit in a trip to the tulip fields while they are in full bloom!  Next year.

Maggie and Lucy decided they would pick daffodils from Grammy's garden instead...and each had a bouquet to take home.

This week the guys are busy cutting grass.  As the saying goes...'make hay while the sun shines'!   And so the farmer was busy 'making hay'...and the 'farmer's wife' went to Grandparent's Day on her own this morning.

And those are a few of the memories and moments from the month of April at "My Front Porch".

Thanks to all of you who continue to stop by, even when it may seem like I'm not home.  You are wonderful friends!

Until next month...

fly over canada...

While we were away touring the US of A...
our oldest two granddaughters had a birthday.
So we took them on a birthday outing this weekend!
We drove to Vancouver to take in the new 'FlyOver Canada' presentation at Canada Place.

Since their brother soon has a birthday as well...
he joined us!

We had lunch on the waterfront...
and then walked around Canada Place to the venue.

Though it is all just pretend...
one sees Canada from up above while soaring through the air in a flight simulation ride.
It comes complete with wind...and mist...and scents.

It was a first class flight.
I'd recommend it...
for all ages!

It's a great way to see our vast country in record time.
No RV required!

Spencer and Emerson ~ 12 years old
Ryder ~ soon to be eight

(Emme has a way of standing on tip-toes these days...
since it seems her twin sister has shot ahead in height lately!)

We drove through Stanley Park before returning home...
with a stop at Prospect Point.
Is it ever too cold for ice-cream cones?
Not according to the grands!
They enjoyed their cones.
We had coffee to keep warm.

We treasure time spent with our grands!

celebrations and mourning...

Life is like that.
The good and bad...
the happy and the sad...
always seem to come at the same time.

We had Celebrations book launch events over the weekend.
at Granville Island and in Victoria..
The heavy rain hardly dampened our spirits...
and we had such a good time.
A celebration.
And we met the nicest of folk!

Though we came prepared with boots and umbrellas...
Friday night in downtown Victoria couldn't have been nicer.
The rain stopped...
and we enjoyed our walk in the city...
and our dinner with a view of the parliament buildings.

We had a lot of laughs over the weekend...
and you may even hear some of the stories one day.

But as we were returning from our most enjoyable weekend...
I received a text message that came as a shock.
Hubby's sister had just passed away.
 Now that was not expected!
Of all the days...
Elmer had decided he would stop in and pay her a visit on Saturday.
He arrived to see several ambulances parked outside her front door...
and a houseful of paramedics.
He never had a chance to say good-bye.
Yesterday we celebrated our granddaughter's fifth birthday.
But at the same time we were sad...
at the loss of a sister.
A sister who will not be celebrating her birthday next week...
but instead will be rejoicing in heaven.
Laughter and tears.
Celebrations and sadness.
Such is life!

celebration interlude...

I'll be back on the road with my next post...mostly in Rhode Island...but I'm taking a wee detour today to document what's happening here and now.

Though it may feel like fall to some of you...somewhere...over here it is blazing hot this week.  We have broken all kinds of temperature records...with more falling every day.  The fall harvest is underway...with much of the corn coming in off the field this week.  Things ground to a halt early on September 11th since we had a birthday to celebrate.  And that can't wait until next year!

The whole gang came for a birthday supper (outside, of course!)...and the birthday boy had his choice dessert.  Lucy insisted on sitting on his lap...and sharing dessert with her favorite Papa.  Micah was most impatient for grandpa to open the gift he brought...since he knew it was exactly what grandpa would want.  A hotwheels set!  And then he begged grandpa to leave his party and come race cars with him downstairs.  Too cute!  And Ranen brought grandpa raisin oatmeal cookies...since she knew they were his favorite.  Grands are precious!

We are not done with birthdays just yet though.  My dad is celebrating this weekend as well.  He is ninety-one years young...and still going strong.

So we will celebrate him!  Every day is a gift...and every 365 days we stop to say thank-you to God for the blessings of another year.  I am most grateful today to still have my father around!

Wishing each of you a wonderful weekend...with lots of reasons to celebrate as well.

double the blessing...

This has little to do with our road trip...
but everything to do with celebrating the arrival of my niece's twin boys.

They came a wee bit early...
while we were off wandering about the east coast.

I saw them for the first time on facebook...

(picture by grandma Dot ~ borrowed from facebook)
...just as sweet as can be.
Two peas in a pod!

We never knew whether the babies would be boys or girls.
It was like it used to be....
a surprise when the baby arrives.
Make that babies!

While on our road trip...
I crocheted around a few receiving blankets for the coming babies.
They were both girl-flavoured blankies...
since I just thought they would be having twin girls.
 It's what I know!
I reasoned that I could always do up a boy blanket yet last minute...
if one of the babies was a boy.
What a surprise...
two boys!
 I made two more blankets...
in more appropriate colours.

Yesterday we welcomed the babies with a shower...
and honoured their mother...
...my niece, Jamie.

The cake was decorated by her sister...
using the babies room decor as inspiration.

The twins slept through the entire party.
The wee twins, that is!

My twin grands got a chance to cuddle with their second cousins as well.
Most special!

How fun to welcome Eli and Finn.

Children are a reward from the Lord.
Psalm 127:3

Have a wonderful day...
this end-of-summer holiday!

celebrating his special day...

Our oldest son is having a birthday today...
and that is a good reason to celebrate.

 It's actually a special birthday...
a milestone for sure!

We are in far away Maine today...
and won't be there to sing 'happy birthday'...
or share the cake.

But we started the celebrations before we left home...
with a birthday dinner in a revolving restaurant...
high in the skies above the city of Vancouver.

How is it possible that our firstborn is forty already...
when it seems just yesterday we were celebrating his first??

The years have gone by...
too quickly...
it seems!

The Lord bless you
    and keep you;
the Lord make his face shine on you
    and be gracious to you;
the Lord turn his face toward you
    and give you peace.
Numbers 6: 24-26

Happy 40th Birthday, Kris!
Love,

(and Dad, too)

guess where I was...again?

I just learned after six years of blogging...
that there is an unspoken rule that you never blog about the same place twice.

Well...since the rule has been broken time and again over here...
let me break it again!

I was at Minter Gardens...

 ...again!

By now you know there are a few things I never tire of.
Friends and flowers!

And so I returned to Minter Gardens on Monday...
to meet a new/old friend.

 Guess who?
Pamela...
a blogging friend from New Brunswick...
who happens to be in my corner of the world visiting family.

She hardly seemed a stranger to me!
We had a wonderful afternoon...
strolling the gardens and chatting about...
this, that and everything.
Like old friends do.

 And playing with our cameras...
of course.
Pam's blog is called
where she shares her life on the east coast...
in techni-colour!
Check it out...
you won't be disappointed.

I'm so glad it worked out for us to meet up that way!

As we left the gardens...
and passed through the gift shop...
this sign caught my eye.

I like that!
So true.

On this Wednesday I am thankful for flowers and friends.

In particular...
I am most thankful for my best friend...
who is celebrating his 42nd wedding anniversary today.

With me,
of course!

a classic father's day...

My dad doesn't ask for much.
But several weeks ago he made a request.
There was to be a BBQ and vintage car show at Garden Park Tower on Father's Day...
and he wondered if maybe we could come...
and bring the old Monarch.

We would do our best to make it happen...of course!

But the Monarch has left us stranded on occasion...

...and so we decided it might be better to tow it to Abbotsford instead of driving it.

Garden Park Tower...

...the name of the high-rise on the left.
A place dad has called home for the past year.

We unloaded the car just down the road...
and drove it to Garden Park.

There was a spot reserved for us...
 beside the 1972 Cadillac convertible.
I hardly remember when cars were that big!

How nice of the Garden Park people to plan a BBQ for Father's Day!

Marge came down and joined us in the park for lunch.
She hasn't been out much since she had a stroke in February...
so we were glad she could make it.

I recognized the voice before I saw the singer!
I knew Elsie a very long time ago (when she cut her first record)...
and she can still sing like the best of them!
She was the featured entertainment while we ate.

She sings songs my dad likes...
and sang one especially for him yesterday.

Dad was quite thrilled to show his car to the guys...
inside and out.

He knows it well...
since he restored it to it's original condition himself.

From the painting to the upholstery...
he did it all.

In theory it is now my car...
registered to my name.

In reality...
it's dad's car and always will be.

And he's quite pleased to have it  featured on the back cover of the original
Mennonite Girls Can Cook cookbook.

Mary Ellen and Dot (my sisters) also joined us for lunch.
They each have a vintage car restored by dad as well.
Mary Ellen has a Mustang.
Dot has a Cougar.
Neither had a trailer to bring them to the BBQ yesterday.

I'm most thankful that I still have a dad to spend time with on Father's Day...
or any other day...
for that matter!

 In the evening...
we took Tim and Heidi...
Maggie and Lucy out for a joy-ride in the Monarch.

Here's the thing...
there were no seat belts in 1947.
There are no seat belts today.
How did that ever work with kids?
We drove most carefully to our destination.

DQ...for ice-cream.
It was Maggie's first DQ ice-cream cone...ever!
Due to her peanut allergy...
she has never been allowed DQ ice-cream.

Yesterday...
they decided to take a chance...
EpiPen at the ready.

All was well...
and Maggie had a most memorable Father's Day as well.

And that in a nutshell...
was Father's Day 2013.

Have a wonderful Monday!

manitoba ~ memories and moments...

I'm back with a story or two...
of the people and events that made our time in Manitoba most memorable.

In the end...
it's always about the people...isn't it?

In Winnipeg...I met family that I rarely get to see.

Cousin Linda and her daughter Renee (upper right) came to McNally Robinson on Thursday night.

Aunt Justine, Cousin Heather and her daughter Meara (lower left)...
and my cousin Darlene (lower right) took me out for breakfast on Saturday morning....
before the booksigning at Ten Thousand Villages.

How fun to have a quick catch-up with what's happening in their world!

It was so good to see Hilda as well...
a longtime family friend.

I met Char's daughters (Amy and Emily) for the first time...
and thoroughly enjoyed the camper's stew prepared for us by her hubby, Tony.

Betty's daughter Allison played chauffeur for us during our stay...
and her grand daughter Kaila came joined us on Saturday.
What fun those two are!
We also met Betty's sister, Norma...
who cooked up a fabulous dinner for us one night.
It was so nice to see Betty on her turf...
and meet her family.

We met many interesting people who came out to the booksignings.
People like this gentleman...
who came all the way from Portland, Oregon.

He just happened to be in Steinbach on business...
and decided to visit the museum over his lunch hour.
He was most surprised to discover that Mennonite Girls Can Cook were set up in the lobby.
He had met us earlier...on-line.
And here we were...in the flesh.
He bought some books to take home with him.
We signed them.

And then there were these gals who we met at the Steinbach museum.
Aren't they just the sweetest?
They even had new dresses for the occasion.

This one showed up in her apron.
She is enthusiastic about cooking...
and life in general.
She dishes out words of encouragement quite freely as well!

There's no story behind this photo of Betty...
except that she doesn't know I took it.
And I really like it!

Betty took us to her place for a tour.
While she was off signing books...
it seems some of her hanging plants got a little dry.

Lovella thought she would just lift the basket up a little...
to see if it was thirsty.
Next thing we knew...
the plant was lying on the deck.
Sorry, Betty!
Lovella put the plant back into the basket...
and went out in search of water.

It seems there was always something to make us smile.

had us sharing a display with
'300 Years of Beer...
the history of brewing in Manitoba'.
The authors were featured guests there that evening as well.
We found that rather amusing.

Those are just a few of the memorable people and moments that I will long remember...

...along with the warm welcome and good times we shared in friendly Manitoba.
