Ein Gedi National Park was founded in 1972 and is one of the most important reserves in Israel. The park is situated on the eastern border of the Judean Desert, on the Dead Sea coast, and covers an area of 6,250 acres (25 km2). The elevation of the land ranges from the level of the Dead Sea at 418 meters (1,371 ft) below sea level to the plateau of the Judean Desert at 200 meters above sea level.

Hiking at En Gedi

Just down the road from Qumran, across the highway from the Dead Sea, is the fabulous oasis area of Ein Gedi. There are two beautiful wadis (valleys) there that are fed by underground springs. In each, the clear water from the springs cascades down the valley in a series of waterfalls and refreshing pools. The pools are deep enough for swimming, and the site attracts a fair number of tourists. This shot is of Hidden Falls, at the end of the Wadi Arugot trail.
