The overwhelming majority of the respondents (89%) indicated they had an experience with racism or discrimination. Of those who did encounter discrimination, approximately three-quarters reported some lasting mental health or emotional and psychological effect. Moreover, while Black Americans have been historically the most visible target for overt and covert acts of racism, they were not the only racial group to report such experiences. It was found that Latinos, Asians, and Biracial people also reported repeated experiences with discrimination and racism some in the form of being profiled. For most of the respondents experiences with discrimination occurred in many aspects of the participants lives including, work, school, and social situations, as well as were they lived and shopped. Hostile discrimination or racial harassment occ...

This study examined differences in self-identified religious denominations in the cultural values of Black and White Americans. A multivariate analysis of variance revealed a significant effect for race and cultural values supporting that self-identified religious denomination differs by racial group membership. Discriminant function analyses for Blacks and Whites separately also revealed significant differences in cultural value preferences and self-identified religious denomination, such that certain values predicted participant self-identified denomination. Results inform efforts to increase counselling competence for the inclusion of religiousness in therapy. Suggestions for further research are considered.

The study employed the Visible Racial Ethnic/Identity Attitude Scale and Intercultural Values Inventory. A regression analysis revealed racial identity status attitudes predict value orientation preferences of human nature as evil, lineal and collateral social relationships, and a belief in harmony with nature. Five repeated measures multivariate analysis of variance revealed a mixed and good view of human nature, a sense of harmony with nature and a future preference. More complex preferences were found with respect to the activity and social relations orientations, reflecting a blending of Eurocentric and Latino cultural values.

Scale items were derived from existing measures of race-related stress and models of trauma, and were tested on a 330 racially heterogeneous (e.g., Blacks, White, Asian, and Hispanic) adult sample. Exploratory Factor Analyses with oblique rotations revealed a 52-item measure consisting of seven scales; Depression, Anger, Physical Reactions, Avoidance, Intrusion, Hypervigilance/Arousal, and Low Self-Esteem. The findings are consistent with symptom clusters associated with the conceptual model of race-based traumatic stress. The RBTSSS adds a tool to counseling assessment by providing mental health professionals a way to assess the emotional reactions of racism and racial discrimination. Implications for counseling and future research are discussed. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2011 APA, all rights reserved)
