Within Lan Su, there are few plants or trees that engender deeper feeling or more significance than the Osmanthus heterophyllus ‘Variegatus’ — or sweet olive osmanthus—in the Courtyard of Tranquility, just inside the garden’s front door. Thought to be more than 100 years old, it is showing its advanced age and like the natural life cycle of all living things, our osmanthus – nicknamed “Old Gui” or old noble one – has finally reached the end of its life’s story. This fall the garden reached out to artists that could commemorate the tree by creating art from the tree after its removal on monday. I am deeply honored to have been chosen to participate in this project and will be collaborating on a new jewellery line available @lansuchinesegarden this December.
