In this section, we intend to put into relief the manner in which Religion coexisted with other aspects of the human worldview, such as Philosophy, Politics, Science, and Magic during the period under discussion. The interdisciplinary debate which coincided with the beginning of man's realization of his place in an ever-expanding world provided an historical context from which no person or event can be isolated.

In this section, we intend to put into relief the manner in which Religion coexisted with other aspects of the human worldview, such as Philosophy, Politics, Science, and Magic during the period under discussion. The interdisciplinary debate which coincided with the beginning of man's realization of his place in an ever-expanding world provided an historical context from which no person or event can be isolated.

The extension of magical practices in modern Spain is the result of a heterogeneous process. The coexistence of the three main faiths in Spain (Christianity, Judaism and Islam) favored a climate of exchanges in the area of the hermetic science. In this climate, magical devices could be shared by the three religious communities. A clear example of the transmission of magical ideas from al-Andalus into Christian Spain is the translation of the Latin Picatrix (Maslama ibn Qāsim al-Qurṭubī’s Ghāyat al-Ḥakīm) and its summarization in the aljamiado Libro de dichos maravillosos. The changes operated in this treatise show us the nature of the factors involved in the transmission of magic."

En cierta literatura de carácter teológico, su imagen se vería influida por la filosofía del momento y se acabaría imbricando con idea de brujería que emanaba de Europa. Por el contrario, las parteras y sanadoras de las fuentes musulmanas se encuentran rodeadas de un halo de santidad.

The two main aims in the elaboration of Morisco talismans in Early modern Spain were to preserve ... more The two main aims in the elaboration of Morisco talismans in Early modern Spain were to preserve health and to benefit love. Love and health were usually thought to be affected by curses, witchcraft, or evil eye. As long as Moriscos were seen as granters of a special touch for magical matters, Early Modern Spanish population brought them their issues in order to repair them. The Morisco magical artifacts were usually worn inside little pouches and hidden between the garments. They included Muslim prayers, Quran verses, enigmatic words, and also magical symbols, which can be also found in other magical artifacts from different geographies.
