Devan Rosen (Ph.D., Cornell University) is currently Professor of Emerging Media at Ithaca College in the Roy H. Park School of Communications, where he is also the Program Director for the Emerging Media B.S. Degree Program in the Department of Media Arts, Sciences, and Studies. Professor Rosen’s research focuses on the social uses of new media, social network analysis, and distributed socio-technical systems. These central foci are used to analyze the utopic and dystopic impacts of media technologies on communication, community, and culture. He has developed social and semantic network-analytic methods for the analysis of dynamic social and communication networks in online environments, and applied these methods to a myriad of online communities. His research on decentralized self-organizing systems has been featured as the basis for several episodes of the hit CBS show Numb3rs. In addition to publishing extensively in scientific journals and edited volumes, Professor Rosen has consulted with leading technology companies, marketing and design houses, governments, medical research organizations, and higher education.

Virtual communities that allow many users to interact in a virtual world, often called multi-user... more Virtual communities that allow many users to interact in a virtual world, often called multi-user virtual worlds (MUVWs), allow users to explore and navigate the virtual world as well as interact with other users. The communicative interaction within these virtual worlds is often text-based using Internet relay chat (IRC) and related systems. IRC has posed a difficulty for researchers looking to evaluate the interaction by analyzing and interpreting the communication since data is stored in the form of chatlogs. The current chapter explicates methodological procedures for the measurement and visualization of chat-based communicative interaction in MUVWs as social networks. A case study on an educational MUVW, the SciCentr programs sponsored by Cornell University, is used to elaborate methods and related findings.

Learning and knowledge creation is often distributed across multiple media and sites in networked... more Learning and knowledge creation is often distributed across multiple media and sites in networked environments. Traces of such activity may be fragmented across multiple logs and may not match analytic needs. As a result, the coherence of distributed interaction and emergent phenomena are analytically cloaked. Understanding distributed learning and knowledge creation requires multi-level analysis of the situated accomplishments of individuals and small groups and of how this local activity gives rise to larger phenomena in a network. We have developed an abstract transcript representation that provides a unified analytic artifact of distributed activity, and an analytic hierarchy that supports multiple levels of analysis. Log files are abstracted to directed graphs that record observed relationships (contingencies) between events, which may be interpreted as evidence of interaction and other influences between actors. Contingency graphs are further abstracted to twomode directed graphs that record how associations between actors are mediated by digital artifacts and summarize sequential patterns of interaction. Transitive closure of these associograms yields sociograms, to which existing network analytic techniques may be applied, yielding aggregate results that can then be interpreted by reference to the other levels of analysis. We discuss how the analytic hierarchy bridges between levels of analysis and theory.

The current study investigates engagement activities in an online resource exchange community exp... more The current study investigates engagement activities in an online resource exchange community exploring elements such as sense of belonging, connectedness, and trust. CouchSurfing.com is an online cultural exchange community in which members from around the globe coordinate travel accommodations and organize gatherings with fellow members via a social media platform. Findings confirmed that members who have not met face-to-face with other members have a lower sense of belonging to the community than those who have. Increased attendance to gatherings was positively related to sense of belonging to the community, and hosting had a positive relationship with trust in the community. Additionally, CouchSurfers reported that they preferred to be contacted through personal e-mails rather then group e-mails, while those who reported an increased participation in gatherings found group e-mails to be useful.

Social cognitive theory suggests a likely relationship between behavior mod-eled on increasingly ... more Social cognitive theory suggests a likely relationship between behavior mod-eled on increasingly popular reality television (RTV) and user behavior mod-eled on social networking sites (SNSs). This study surveyed young adults (ND 456) to determine the extent to which RTV consumption explained a range of user behavior in the context of social network sites. Results show a consistent relationship between RTV consumption and the length of time spent on these sites, the size of users ’ networks, the proportion of friends not actually met face to face, and photo sharing frequency while controlling for age and gender. The current research utilized a survey (N=452) of young adults to examine the occurrence of culturally- and gender-influenced differences in online behavior, offline networks, and satisfaction. Results show that participants who identify with more individualistic cultural backgrounds have larger networks of friends on social network sites (SNSs), have a greater proportion of these friends not actually met face-to-face, and share more photos online opposed to participants who identify with less individualistic cultural backgrounds. Social support network size was a significant predictor of satisfaction with life, while SNS network size was not. Results indicate that international students significantly increase and adapt their new media use while abroad to communicate globally with their friends and family, and locally with their newly formed relationships. Furthermore, social networking site host national friends do not necessarily lead to the development of face-to-face host national friends; however, interaction with established face-to-face host national friends and friend groups via new media platforms leads to an increased understanding of host communication patterns. Finally, this study proposes that researchers who apply Kim's [1] cross-cultural adaptation theory consider incorporating Host New Media Communication as a principal concept.
