This past week my 4th graders have been working on some radial printmaking. To begin the project, we started by reviewing a PowerPoint which goes over the three basic types of symmetry; linear or bilateral symmetry, radial symmetry, and asymmetry. In the beginning of the year my 4th graders made mandalas, so they were already very familiar with radial symmetry and design. Students explored an introduction to reductive printmaking through styrofoam radial design prints. Students explored mandalas and the radial designs that are created using patterns. Students used a single square styrofoam printing plate to create a single print that could be turned to create a radial design.

This is a gorgeous styro print project I saw online HERE a few years ago. I finally got around to teaching it this past year. Let me tell you- the struggle was REAL! This took forever to complete and many of my students got frustrated. There's a large amount of unpredictability in this lesson and my perfectionists really struggled with getting 'perfect' prints. Fifth grade students learned how to create RADIAL DESIGN prints in art class at Central Riverside Elementary School . First, they carefully carved a line design into soft styro-foam plates (4" square) by pressing gently with a dull pencil.
