The research adopted a concurrent triangulation strategy with maximum variation/heterogeneous purposive sampling. The participants of the study are 44 preschool teachers who participated in a STEM workshop designed for preschool teachers. The study utilized two instruments for data collection. For the quantitative data, a survey and a rubric to score the survey is developed and the qualitative data is collected by a semistructured interview form developed by the researcher. Paired samples t-test was performed to determine if preschool teachers' perceptions about early childhood STEM education differed after the STEM workshop they participated. The analysis revealed that preschool teachers' perceptions of early STEM education changed significantly (p = .000, N = 44) from pre to post-survey. Thematic analysis was employed to examine the qualitative data. Findings of the thematic analysis revealed that both the preschool teachers' views about the effects of STEM workshops and their recommendations for an effective STEM workshop fall under six categories. The contribution of this study to the field is to provide quantitative data on the effect of STEM workshops on preschool teachers' perceptions of early STEM practices and to determine the needs of preschool teachers to improve STEM implementations in their classrooms. The research concludes with the discussion of its findings and recommendations for further research.

The sample included 62 children. Thirty received a training program including 3D animated movies and interactive applications every month for 5 months; for comparison, 32 did not engage in any special programs. Mann-Whitney U and Kruskal-Wallis tests were used to analyze the data. The results show that, on average, the visual perception of children who attended the training program was significantly better than that of children who did not.

In the study deviant case sampling, one of the purposeful sampling methods, was used. A total of 61 children between the ages of 7-15 participated in the study. One of the groups consisted of 30 children, who were determined to use digital technology as production-oriented and registered for a training program to improve themselves on this subject. The other group consisted of children who did not participate in a similar program and was determined that their use of digital devices was not production-oriented. In the study, qualitative and quantitative data were evaluated together, and convergent parallel mixed method research design was used. The data of the study were collected through face-to-face interviews with the children through the personal information form and semi-structured interview form. Frequency and percentage values of the quantitative data were calculated, categories were created after the coding for qualitative data and evaluated by content analysis. Differences in the purpose and duration of the use of children's technological devices and suggestions for the beneficial use have been discussed by evaluating the purpose, duration, parental attitudes and effects of them. Development of production-oriented applications that can be used by children with different interests, making these practices widespread through formal education and making them accessible to disadvantaged children have been recommended.

The research has been performed in pretest-posttest-permanence test, experimental pattern with control group. For four months, every fifteen day experimental groups (24 children) watched eight episodes of 3D animated movies; 12 of them performed the interactive applications with computer while the other 12 performed the same applications with worksheets. 14 children in control group engaged merely their preschool education. Test of Visual Motor Skills-3 was used to collect and evaluate the visual motor skills of children. Since the data of the research was not distributed normally, non-parametric Kruskal Wallis, Friedman and Wilcoxon tests were used to analyze the data. The results of the research show that the visual motor skills of children who engaged the study in both test and control groups, had improved significantly.

This study aims to investigate and evaluate the cumulative results of the experimental studies used STEM approach for preschool children. In this study, the meta-analysis method was used. Despite a great number of studies about STEM education, only a limited number of studies were accessed by the keywords “preschool”, “early childhood” and “experimental study”. The effect size obtained (0.556) is at a level that can be considered as moderate according to the classification used in meta-analysis studies. STEM studies aimed at preschool children have positive effects on children's learning and development. However, more experimental studies on STEM in the preschool field are needed. It can be suggested that preschool teachers can be encouraged to design and implement STEM practices in their class. For further research, the results of the meta-analysis can be sup...

On one side, the production-oriented sophisticated use of digital devices is reported while on the other side it is a source of concern due to excessive and pointless use. Some of the children are tech-consumers in terms of using their digital devices and some children use them beneficially. This qualitative study adopts phenomenological approach, with a focus to draw a conclusion for educators and aims to shed light on the technological device use of children in terms of duration, purpose, preferences, and feelings about their usage. A total of 61 children aged 7-15 years participated in the study. The children were from different backgrounds such as different parts of the country, different types of schools and different socioeconomic levels. Identifying the similarities and differences of the characteristics of their usage is thought to reveal the factors that motivate the beneficial use of digital technology or that lead to consumption as a means of leisure time tool. The findings of this study enable to provide recommendations to teachers to guide students in the beneficial use of technology. Furthermore the study has some suggestions in a wider scope of the implications for practice and/or policy.

Elde edilen...

Video recordings of lessons can be used to stimulate self-reflection by capturing the details of the teaching process and by examining the classroom atmosphere. This study aims to investigate teachers' opinions about the use of video-based self-reflection for their pedagogical development. Seven teachers participated in the research. Data were collected through a Pre-interview Protocol, Teachers’ Reflection Reports written for twelve weeks about one recorded lesson per week, and a Post-interview Protocol after the 12-week video-based self-reflection period. The main findings show that the teachers’ video-based self-reflections constitute nine categories and two weeks of video-based self-reflection process resulted in changes in terms of density and content in teachers’ opinions about the use of video-based self-reflection.

The study used phenomenological research design and 29 children (48-60 months old) were selected with purposive sampling method from a low income district public preschool in Ankara. Data were collected through interviews with children and their drawings. Children were asked three questions about higher education in pre-interview and after their visit to the university campus, in the post-interview they were asked the same questions. The interview results and children’s drawings were analysed by content analysis. The results indicated that participating in a set of activities at the university, children’s understanding of higher education and perception of university changed considerably. It is suggested that universities can carry out activities to raise awareness of children and their families in l...
