Some Trends in the Anthropology of Action

I focus on some (not all) approaches to action in cultural anthropology. The main distinctions ru... more I focus on some (not all) approaches to action in cultural anthropology. The main distinctions run parallel with those in other social sciences: behavioristic, cognitive and "praxeological" perspectives. . In most of the paper I concentrate on the methodological and philosophical implications of the more recent trends in action research within anthropology. In particular I draw attention to the "hermeneutic" or "interpretive anthropology" that is gaining impetus in the present decade. The paper presents a selective overview with some insights into the presuppositions of anthropological terms and concepts.

The reader will thus find discussions of an evolutionary theory of knowledge, including science; micro-sociological approaches to the study of science and technology; and genetic epistemology. In this context, the anthropological, cognitive-ethological, and philosophical significance of evolutionary epistemology is reassessed. After the terrible annihilation of peoples because of their so-called racial features in the Seco... more After the terrible annihilation of peoples because of their so-called racial features in the Second World War, the United Nations Organization was founded to work on the basis of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The basic creed of this attempt at worldwide negotiation and interaction in a common forum was not so much 'no more war', but rather 'human rights and human dignity for all'. One could indeed say that the UN' s purpose is to prevent and eventually to remedy violations of basic rights of anyone by combating structural humiliation, exclusion and enslavement. The establishment of such an organisation and the implementation of the Declaration of Human Rights in actual policies throughout the world have never been attempted on such a large scale in the history of humankind. Over the past five decades, we have witnessed an increase not only in knowledge, but also in behavioural patterns accordant with Human Rights: an unprecedented historical milestone. But not all is well. A political discourse that incites exclusion and hatred for those who are seen as different is unfortunately gaining in appeal, most notably in affluent and developed countries, where certain groups are excluded from the benefits and privileges of mainstream society because of their ethnic, racial or religious identity. Two decades ago it would have been utterly impossible to publicly defend the atrocities of the Holocaust or any other racist policies. Today, however, certain political parties actively support such opinions by drawing upon racist discourses (often disguised as cultural fundamentalist proposals) which are finding massive appeal in the older Western democratic societies (see Ford, this volume). Racism is back, and antiracism is no longer accepted as an argument that suffices in itself. Our first international conference held on these issues highlighted the topic of new manifestations of racism in Europe (Evens, 2002). The formalized reality of the constitutional nation state as we know it emerged in the European c... more The formalized reality of the constitutional nation state as we know it emerged in the European context a few centuries ago, solidifying not only territorial arrangement, but also linguistic, religious and/or cultural boundaries between populations. Nationalism had community building impact in several European countries, but it remained somewhat problematic in 'mixed' states, such as Belgium. In Belgium, one part is French speaking and old capitalism, while the northern part is Dutch (Flemish) speaking and economically dominant since the end of World War II. Flanders was predominantly Catholic. Flemish identity,-equal to low education levels except for some high culture in the past (think of Van Eyck, Brueghel, and later Rubens' workshop)-was tightly linked to devout Catholic religion, perpetuated through an encompassing network of schools, civil and health services, cultural circles and labour unions. Within that historic context many Flemish young people had been convinced by the clergy to join the German army under the Nazi regime in the Eastern Front This led to resentment and nostalgia in several political rightist movements and parties after the war. The role of the underdog (i.e. feeling dominated by the French speaking bourgeoisie) was successful for centrist and right-wing parties, and this success lasts until today: the new 'democratic right' party (the N-VA: the New Flemish Alliance) is dominant in two Belgian governments today, but keeps on positioning itself time and time again as 'the Calimero' of the political arena. With 9/11/2001 and the second Iraq War, centre-left and left-wing parties in Belgium (and Europe in general) were accused of bad governance on immigration in the past, which would "explain" the growing unrest of migrant youth in Europe. Since the war moved to Syria a stream of refugees started, which has given arguments to political leaders of the 'democratic right' to install fear of 'others', i.e., people coming from so-called muslim countries such as Syria or Libya.
