N ell'area etnea 1 il processo di attribuzione di toponimi antichi -attestati da fonti storiograf... more N ell'area etnea 1 il processo di attribuzione di toponimi antichi -attestati da fonti storiografiche o da leggende monetali -ai siti dove sono frequenti i rinvenimenti e le emergenze e dove si notano tracce di un'antropizzazione capillare non è ancora totalmente concluso. Mentre la ricerca antiquaria si è espressa con diverse proposte identificative, la ricerca archeologica si è progressivamente liberata del problema, in alcuni casi trovando sul campo più sicuri elementi di definizione 2 , in altri "sospendendo" il processo attributivo di nomi a "polis" o a centri minori, in attesa di elementi probanti. Gli studi numismatici, anche recenti, invece, sono rimasti invischiati nelle tematiche antiquarie e, partendo da ipotetiche ricostruzioni delle produzioni, si sono inerpicati in complesse ipotesi identificative di centri, che avrebbero creato varie serie. Un esempio significativo del processo -e insieme l'elemento che ne evidenzia la pericolosità -è l'insieme di ipotesi che ha portato ad attribuire all'area alcune sedi di fantomatici gruppi di mercenari 3 , che avrebbero emesso monete, sino a pochi anni or sono non note, e oggi al contrario comuni e attestate da infiniti pezzi. Come si può constatare molti di questi esemplari appaiono ad una attenta analisi falsi evidenti -frutto di una vivace produzione -assenti nei materiali di scavo ed esclusivamente forniti da un settore del mercato clandestino soprattutto commercializzato nel web. Questa premessa è necessaria per chi si debba soffermare su Adrano e il suo territorio, sulle serie attribuibili alla sua zecca e sulla storia degli studi ad esse dedicate, perché la ricostruzione dell'attività della zecca adranita corre il rischio di essere falsata con l'inserimento di pezzi falsi o dubbi. 1 Ringrazio il Soprintendente per i Beni Culturali di Catania, dott. ssa Maria Grazia Branciforti, il responsabile del Servizio Archeologico, dott. Umberto Spigo, e la responsabile del Museo di Adrano, dott.ssa Gioconda Lamagna per l'invito a presentare in occasione del convegno i primi risultati di una ricerca iniziata ormai da qualche anno. Tale ricerca ha tratto notevole giovamento, oltre che dalla conoscenza di monete del Museo e di esemplari provenienti da scavi sistematici, dall'esame di altri "pezzi" di cui si è potuto prendere visione in seguito ad operazioni condotte nel 2004 e nel 2005 dai Sostituti Procuratori dott.ri Fanara e T. Barbara Laudani e dal Nucleo di Tutela del Patrimonio Culturale di Palermo, comandato dal Capitano Giuseppe Marseglia e che ha impegnato i Marescialli Giovinco, Lo Cicero, Busciglio, Mitra, nonché il Car. S. Centrella. Questi "pezzi" -monete prodotte da un laboratorio specializzato, prove di conio e punzoni -hanno aperto insospettabili orizzonti alla ricerca e dopo essere state sottoposte ad analisi ad opera del Reparto Investigazioni Scientifiche di Messina -ad opera dal Capitano E.
