Ethanol has higher % of extract. The extract were phytochemically screened and tested for their biological activity against Staphylococcus aureus (bacteria) and Aspergillius niger (fungi). The phytochemical test showed that both the ethanol and petroleum ether extracts contain bio-active agent. The petroleum ether extracts of Alstonia boonei, Sanseviera transfica and Mimosa pudica shows inhibition zones against staphylococcus aureus and Aspergillus niger.

Indeed, the increase in total antioxidant status is imperative in the recuperation from these diseases. The antioxidant activity, total phenolic and flavonoid contents of Caesalpinia pulcherrima leaves were determined in this study. The powdered dried leaves of C. pulcherrima were screened for their effect on 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical (DPPH). Total phenolic and flavonoid contents of the extract and fractions were estimated using established methods. Concentrations of the plant extracts required for 50% inhibition of DPPH radical scavenging effect (IC50) were recorded as 3.20, 48.11, 33.12, 9.15, 27.26, 17.90, 272.18 and 55.51μg/ml for Ascorbic acid, 100% n-hexane, 50% n-hexane: 50% ethyl acetate, 100% ethyl acetate, 50% ethyl acetate:50% methanol, 100% methanol, 90% methanol:10% water fractions and crude extract, respectively. Total phenolic and flavonoid contents were highest ...

Total phenolic and flavonoid contents were highest for 100% ethyl acetate fraction. The leaf extract and fractions of C. pulcherrima exhibited notable radical scavenging activity and therefore corroborate its use as a natural plant antioxidant by preventing free radical damage.

Ambient air monitoring was conducted at Ikhueniro dumpsite to investigate the emission level of volatile organic compound from open dump site in Benin metropolis. Six (6) sampling points were selected and air samples were collected from the selected sampling sites in ikhueniro dumpsite by passive sampler (ORSA5). The air samples were exposed to a height 1-2m within the human breathing zone. The adsorbed VOCs were desorbed with carbon disulphide (CS 2) and solution analyzed using gas chromatography (GC) fitted with Flame Ionization Detector (FID). The results from analysis of the air samples collected showed that twenty six (26) VOCs were captured in the open dumpsite. The VOCs in the open dumpsite were classified thus: alcohol 6%, aromatic 42%, halogenated 41%, ester 6% and terpinene 5%. The most abundant compounds in the open dumpsite were aromatic and halogenated VOCs. The concentration levels of VOCs were found to be different within the same open dumpsite. The comparison of VOCs at Ikhueniro dumpsite with urban area shows that ambient VOCs at dumpsite were different from the urban areas. Toluene/ benzene (T/B) ratio were observed to be greater than or equal 1µg/m-³ and this is attributed to high vehicular influx of heavy duty vehicle operating within the dumpsite.
