When the encounter between Indian cultures with local culture happened in ancient times, there were some rooms for Sanskrit to be used as medium of expressions. Tri-hita-karana has been seen as the foundation on which Bali Tourism developed to its full range. The methods of study used are library and field researches focusing on the ontological, axiological, and pragmatic levels in Bali tourism. It has found that the significant gain in the field of materiality, spirituality tends to be marginalised and vice-versa. This has further impact on life of Balinese. Imbalance of relationships exists between human beings and their fellows, human beings and nature, and human beings and divinity. Nevertheless, both domains are required in life, and any of these is absent, life is just impossible since life is the permutation of them in complex ways. Materiality gains seem to bring Balinese away from spirituality vis-a-vis religion in its right sense. Of the ethical perspective, the Tri-...

Buddhism since the very beginning has been in harmony with nature; the Buddha was fond of nature; however, it is very little its sources speak about the interconnection between human and environment. The question of the significance of cultural ecology comes into prominent in these days as there has been increasing environmental problems happen. Borobudur Buddhist temple in Central Java contains some ideas or elements that can be used to cope with the problems mentioned. Interestingly, the whole body of the monument was inspired by the teachings of the Buddha and Buddhism in which the Causal Law having impetus in the theory dependent-origination (Pratyasamutpada) is reflected clearly in the reliefs of Mahakarmavibanggain Kamadhatubase level. For a better understanding of this law, the connection with cosmology in Mahayana Buddhism is dis...

Tourism in Bali since the establishment of Bali Beach hotel in Sanur, Denpasar City, and I Gusti ... more Tourism in Bali since the establishment of Bali Beach hotel in Sanur, Denpasar City, and I Gusti Ngurah Rai international airport in Tuban, Badung regency, in 1950s and 1960s, experienced a very rapid development of various aspects. Even currently Bali has a very good brand in the international context and was awarded several times as the best destination in the world. Behind the development of tourism that is so industrialized in various fields, such as tourist attractions, hotels, restaurants, travel agencies, transportation, souvenir shops, and so on, and the arrival of abundant foreign tourists, it turns out many major problems occur behind it. In the development of a number of tourist areas during the New Order (Orde Baru) era (1966-1998) for example, there were various controversies that accompanied, especially related to the unbalanced three-pillar relationship (politic-economy-culture), namely the state, investors (tourism industry), and society. That's why this study is to know how and to at what extent the tourism development in Bali is practiced during the New Order, especially in 1990's. For that reason, this study is based on the critical perspective of cultural studies to find out which side is dominant in the development of tourism and which side is defeated by the dominant power. Related analysis is done by using qualitative analysis techniques by using eclectically theory of hegemony (Antonio Gramsci) and theory of power/knowledge relation (Michel Foucault). Data were collected through interview, observation, and especially document studies. The results of the study show that during the New Order era in Indonesia there was an unequal/unbalanced relationship among the threefolding, i.e three pillars: the state (political power), investors (economic power), and civil society (cultural power). In general, the state almost always collaborated with the investors, so that the society did not exist in the relationship of the three pillars. Getting support from the state, the tourism investors became very dominant and the society was in a defeated position. In the local context, as seen in cases of tourism development that were quite large in Bali, the community was ultimately at a disadvantaged condition. Lack of political will defending the society in tourism development; adverse land sale in the development of tourism facilities; limited employment opportunities in tourism; minimal qualification of knowledge and tourism skills; the development of tourism facilities that damage the physical environment and sanctity that has been preserved by the society; and so forth. Large cases include Padanggalak reclamation (Denpasar), construction of the Selasih golf course (Gianyar), Bali Nirwana Resort, Tanah Lot (Tabanan), and Bali Pecatu Graha (Badung). In such cases, it is clear that the local wisdom of the Balinese community, namely trihita karana (the three causes of well-being and inwardness), namely parhyangan (the relationship between human and God the Creator), pawongan (the relationship between human and human) and palemahan (the relationship between human and nature), is not executed properly because each party, especially the dominant parties, has its own ideology and interests in the tourism development.

The survey was conducted to collect data using an online questionnaire by 109 people of different backgrounds and ages. After analyzing the data, the overall conclusion concludes that the appeal for physical distancing did not significantly affect several activities that could predictably increase the transmission of COVID-19 in Bali. On the same page, the COVID-19 outbreak felt by respondents has damaged their jobs in Bali, which is dominated by the tourism sector. It appears that there are two contradictions between physical distancing calls that are viewed as interfering with respondents' work activities. On the other hand, it is predicted that the outbreak of COVID-19 will increase if physical distancing is not performed, which is worse. This study recommended containing the spread of the COVID-19 outbreak.

As yoga pervades Balinese textual tradition, adaptation and development of teachings in the Indonesian archipelago show the creativity of the indigenous people. The ?iv?gama was analyzed via textual studies with data categorized to foreground concepts of yoga. The s?rgah (canto) 15, in particular, introduces various forms of yoga and sam?dhi for purifying body and mind. Each section describes how to perform a specific yoga, the attributes of the associated deity, and the benefit that can be reaped by the practice. One finding is that the cosmic function from a yogic perspective in the ?iv?gama text differs from the views of Upani?adic texts. The summaries from this study hope to contribute to efforts to understand the teachings of yoga that are available in Sanskrit-Old Javanese literature.

This paper explores the ethics of leadership as contained in the Balinese text ?iv?gama composed by Ida Pedanda Madé Sidêmên (1858–1984) and its relevance for the modern era. Data was taken from lontar palm-leaf manuscripts and analyzed in a qualitative way focusing on the conception of nava natya (nine ethical principles) of leadership. Also included was the pañca visaya, five external objects and the corresponding senses, which can cause harm when facing enemies. In the past, these ethical principles were used as the basis upon which the royal system of governance was practiced for the welfare of all. This concept is still relevant nowadays as long as service is considered to be a human virtue. The research results thus offer a contribution to the study of leadership ethics in the Old Javanese tradition.

Javanese-saivism is not devoid from it as reflected from its sources. Despite of the fact that this tradition was prevalent in ancient time in Java, it is not yet known as a system of philosophy; rather it is much known as a religion along with its arts and culture. This paper attempts to prove its ethical system through finding out some cardinal or essential ethical values/principles as reflected in its literature written in Sanskrit-Old Javanese and Kawi-Balinese in the form of palm-leaf manuscripts. Data found in them are identified, collected, grouped, and analyzed to answer the objectives of the research. Ethical principles are pointed out and elucidated to see its nature, position, relation with others, and its significance in the spiritual pursuit of seeker. Conclusion was formulated as a result of data analysis obtained from those sources. The analysis shows that this system of philosophy is supported with a system of ethics in which metaphysics, ethics, and rituals are inseparable parts; each of them is connected to form holistic system of philosophy. Whatsoever ethical virtues found it them, dharma behaves as the very foundation of all ethical principles and the pursuit by observing ethics terminate in freedom or emancipation of self from body-known as moksa, as the highest goal of life. Some other values found in them are catur-purusa-artha, catur-asrama, purity, tri-kaya, karmapatha, asubha-subha-karma, yama-niyama, yoga, and moksa. They are essential and each of them is connected in some ways, and each of them aims at selftransformation. All kinds of desires that are to be satisfied should be attempted based on dharma (righteousness).
