However, Ideological projections and prejudiced clichés limit researchers, and then two popular mentalities gain longstanding dominance: China’s response to the West and the overemphasis on communist revolution. In this chapter, we attempt to discover the political modernization in China by emphasizing how China’s politics and its tradition actually work, and contextualizing the political changes that modern China encounters. Three themes will be the focus: empire’s legacy, state-building and its failure, and revolution as a way to modernization. These themes not only can reveal the historical contexts, somewhat ill-treated by researchers, but also uncover the involution process in which China struggles for its political modernity. It can be argued that China’s politics in these multiple involutions steps out of the ancien régime, and out of revolutionary ambience later, finally achieving its modernity.

The development of sociology in postwar Taiwan takes a crooked path. It is in the crooked path to postwar that the indigenization in Taiwan’s sociology takes different faces, employing different terminology and constellating around different academic figures to embody the indigenization as we have known today. Although the path from sinicization to Taiwanization may nicely capture the basic line of Taiwan’s sociology after the Second World War, it does fail to reveal the details that can suggest to a more dynamic, more controversial side of indigenization. In this short article, we review the emergence, transformation, and invisibilization of indigenization in postwar Taiwan in the following three aspects: its periodization, the socio-political background in which the debate is embedded, and the key issues involved. While the indige...
