Retinal damage induces cellular and molecular changes that place Müller cells as focal points to either protect or further impair neuronal function. This work evaluated the involvement of extracellular vesicles (EVs) in the transduction of high N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) concentration signal between Müller glia-to-Müller glia as part of several factors and signal transduction mechanisms dictating either a gliotic (damaging) or regenerative process. These EVs were obtained, characterized, and quantified from control and NMDA-treated Müller cells using murine Müller cell primary cultures to evaluate the functional outcome of these preparations. The obtained results support the existence of different subpopulations of EVs that may induce a differential response. These EVs did not affect the viability, migration, and wound healing capacity of cu...

Collagen accumulation and calcification are major determinants of plaque stability, although the mechanisms linking fibrotic and calcific responses are unknown. The collagen receptor discoidin domain receptor-1 (DDR-1) regulates plaque calcification in vivo ; however, its role in the release of calcifying EVs remains unclear. We hypothesize that DDR-1 regulates the processes of fibrosis and EV-induced calcification in atherosclerotic plaques. Methods and results: Smooth muscle cells (SMC) from the carotid arteries of wild type and DDR-1 knockout (DDR-1 -/- ) mice (n=5 per group) were cultured in control or calcifying media. At days 14 and 21, cells were harvested and EVs isolated for analysis. Compared to wild type cells, DDR-1 -/- SMCs exhibited a 3.5-fold increase in EV release (p<0.001) as well as elevated EV calcifying potential determined by E...

This study was performed in order to identify new bioagents with microbicidal activity in vitro. We approached the effects of cultivated plant extracts upon a fluconazole-resistant (ATCC 750) and a fluconazole-sensitive (ATCC 18803) strains of C. tropicalis which were incubated with the essential oils of Schinus terebinthifolius and Eugenia uniflora, for 24 hours and analyzed by MTT method. Assessment of cytotoxicity on murine splenocytes was measured by [3H] Thymidine incorporation and flow cytometry using rhodamine 123 probe, respectively. The structural changes were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy. Secondary metabolites present in the extracts were identified by gas chromatography. The concentrations of essential oils showed significantly (p <0.05) inhibited the viability of strains. GC-MS tests identified the presence of active substances recognized for its ...

Metodologia: Foram utilizadas as resinas compostas: Z100TM (microhíbrida), FiltekTM Z350 XT (nanoparticulada) e a FiltekTM Bulk fill (sistema bulkfill).

In this paper, a case study shows a new methodology to solve design decision problems in discrete event systems (DEVS). This technique is based in the Alternatives Aggregation Petri nets (AAPN). This new type of Petri net allows to develop a unique model to cope with a disjunctive optimisation problem. This problem arises from the alternative systems accepted as feasible solutions for the layout and composition of the system. A comparison with a traditional approach shows that the new method can deal with a complex design problem in less time and with similar accuracy in the solution.

The ferro-paraelectric transition temperature is reduced from 386 °C to 352 °C. Remnant polarization and coercive field measurements were made from the hysteresis loops obtained at 23 °C and at different applied electric fields up to a maximum of 17 kV/cm. Piezoelectric performance was studied in the 4 Hz to 4 MHz frequency range at 25 °C and the radial electromechanical coupling factor was determined. A detailed electrical conductivity study in the 30-450 °C temperature range is performed in a wide frequency interval. The different participating transport mechanisms are elucidated and the corresponding activation energies were determined by fitting the experimental data. In particular, in the 30 to 300 °C temperature interval, the ac conductivity follows Jonscher universal relaxation law.

Rietveld refinement of the x-ray diffraction patterns indicates that the Pr ion progressively replaces the Sr site in the A 2(1)am space group structure. The solubility of Pr in solid solution is around 15%. The replacement induces a change in the crystal structure and, as a consequence, the dielectric properties are affected. The ferroelectric transition at T(m)∼558 K is shifted to lower temperatures, T(m)∼413 K for x = 0.15 composition. Apparently, the tilt angle (α) associated with the c-axis does not play an important role since it remains essentially constant. However, the rotation in the ab-plane (β) as well as the octahedral distortion observed are strongly related to the coupling between T(m) and x. A relaxor-type transition is observed as Pr is increased, leading to polar microregions above the nominal ferroelectric transition. The local disorder induced by the Pr ion is confirmed by the continuous increase in the diffuseness coefficient according to Isupov's model. These facts hinder the displacement of the TaO(6) octahedra with respect to Bi(2)O(2) along the polarization axis, decreasing the polarization values.

Nonuniform magnetization resonance is found. With the aim of describing the resonance phenomena, an equivalent electrical circuit is proposed, and its electrical parameters are deduced from micromagnetic simulations. Comparisons of spin-torque nano-oscillators with conventional voltage-controlled oscillators are also provided.

An additional damping contribution to the Gilbert parameter is obtained when the spatial dependence of the magnetization is taken into account. These results are used to quantitatively explain the large value of the

Under a weak oscillating field, the wall performs irregular transitions between both constrictions in the presence of thermal fluctuations. Ours results indicate that synchronized wall transitions with the driving field can be achieved at the optimal level of noise. The stochastic resonance is quantified by computing the output signal power as a function of temperature. The analysis points out that this system could be used to design well-controlled amplification devices, which could find application as nanodetectors.

The lack of high-resolution imaging tools to study early stage disease further hampers the search for therapeutic targets.
