Pierre-Jean Bordahandy is a graduate from the University of Pau in France, he holds a diploma in criminal sciences, a D.E.S.S. (French L.L.M.) in Maritime and Transport Law (University of Aix-en-Provence), and a L.L.M. in Private International Law and comparative law (University of Stockholm). Pierre-Jean has written a first master thesis on the legal status of Off-shore rigs and a second master thesis on the duty to provide cargo under a voyage charter-party.After his two masters, Pierre-Jean has worked in France for a couple of years as an in house lawyer for a company involved in the international trade of flat glass (cargo claim, insurance policies, charter parties etc.). He has also worked in Australia for Gadens Lawyers and occasionally for Blake Dawson and Waldron advising on French law regarding mining related matters in New Caledonia. Pierre-Jean also does regular some consulting work on freight forwarding and jurisdiction clauses.In 2007 Pierre-Jean completed his PhD in Maritime Law on “the concept of container and its legal implications” under a joint supervision and double degree scheme between the University of Queensland (Maritime and Shipping Law Unit) and the University of Aix-en-Provence (Centre de Droit Maritime et des Transports). Since then Pierre-Jean has published extensively on issues related to shipping containers, both in French, English, Spanish and Portuguese. In 2014-2015 Pierre-Jean obtained a scholarship from the Brazilian Federal Research council to undertake a postdoctoral research on Brazilian Maritime Law. Since joining the University of the South Pacific, Pierre-Jean has worked on a number of research and development projects in collaboration with NGO and UN agencies such as the WFP. Pierre-Jean has also collaborated with the Micronesian Centre for Sustainable Transport on the current IMO negotiations to reduce GHG emissions from shipping. Lastly, since 2019 Pierre-Jean is also Co-Investigator in the Pacific cluster of the One Ocean Hub.Pierre-Jean has 15 years’ experience in teaching subjects such as contract law, comparative law, international export trade law, maritime law, shipping law, law of the sea, and international fisheries.
