ABSTRACT Particle swarm optimization (PSO) has been widely used to solve real-valued optimization... more ABSTRACT Particle swarm optimization (PSO) has been widely used to solve real-valued optimization problems. A variant of PSO, namely, binary particle swarm optimization (BinPSO) has been previously developed to solve discrete optimization problems. Later, many studies have been done to improve BinPSO in term of convergence speed, stagnation in local optimum, and complexity. In this paper, a novel multi-state particle swarm optimization (MSPSO) is proposed to solve discrete optimization problems. Instead of evolving a high dimensional bit vector as in BinPSO, the proposed MSPSO mechanism evolves states of variables involved. The MSPSO algorithm has been applied to two benchmark instances of traveling salesman problem (TSP). The experimental results show that the the proposed MSPSO algorithm consistently outperforms the BinPSO in solving the discrete combinatorial optimization problem.

This technique has now become an important process in the joining of aluminum alloys and other materials that had been difficult to weld in the past using more traditional fusion techniques. The amount of heat generated between the shoulder and the work-piece during friction stir processing dictates a successful process which is defined by the quality, shape, and microstructure of the processed zone, as well as the residual stress and the distortion of the work-piece. Hence understanding the distribution of heat and obtaining the temperature profiles is remarkably significant in understanding the general process of friction stir welding. Friction stir welding is the latest technology in the area of metal joining and the most promisin... more Friction stir welding is the latest technology in the area of metal joining and the most promising of all the welding processes. FSW technology produces welds that are stronger and more durable than other techniques, and it can be done faster, resulting in less cost. This paper aims to develop a finite element model (FEM) with improved potential and validate by comparing the simulation results with experimental results obtained by Jamshidi et al. on dissimilar aluminum alloys AA6061 to AA5086. A commercial finite element software ANSYS ® is used for simulation of friction stir welding using moving coordinate system procedure. Temperature profiles are obtained for two cases, first when AA6061 is located on the advancing side and second when AA6061 is located on the retreating side. The simulation results are in good agreement with that of experimental results.

FSW produces a weld that is strong than the base material because melting does not occur and joining takes place below the melting temperature of the material. FSW produces no fumes and can join aluminum alloys, magnesium, steels, copper and titanium. In this study, a thermo-mechanical model with improved potential is developed to study the formation of residual stress field in dissimilar materials. The model predictions were confirmed with experimental data obtained by Jamshidi et al. on dissimilar aluminum alloys AA6061 to AA5086. A commercial finite element software ANSYS ® is used for simulation of friction stir welding. Longitudinal and transverse residual stresses are obtained when AA5086-O on the advancing side and AA6061-T6 on the retreating side after 15sec.

This paper focuses on the experimental analysis of a polymeric composite fabricated with epoxy resin (Araldite AY105 with hardener HY951) and banana fiber.The effect of different fiber volume fraction and fiber ratio on the properties ofthe composites like storage modulus, loss modulus, tensile, fatigue strength was investigated. Fatigue life of a banana fiber reinforced composite under tension-tension fatigue at different volume fraction of fiber was examined.

The energy release criteria is used for calculation of SIF and the history of stress intensity factor of the cracked body for different crack lengths. This can be obtained by a closed-form integration of the stress field, using Duhamel's theory with the principle of superposition for boundary conditions and appropriate weight functions. The obtained results are compared with numerical simulations performed with ABAQUS, both mathematical method and FEM method give the same results. In this paper the stainless steel AISI 304L is taken as a base or substrate metal with a crack in the middle of the plate and coating is done on the plate.

A cross-sectional study was conducted to predict the outcome in patients with subdural empyema, u... more A cross-sectional study was conducted to predict the outcome in patients with subdural empyema, using initial and post-treatment CT scan brain parameters. Data collection was done on those children who were diagnosed to have subdural empyema by CT scan of the brain with contrast, who underwent burrhole evacuation, from February 2000 until April 2002. Numerous factors, such as coma or loss of unconsciousness at diagnosis, age, types of antibiotic, microbiology, extension of empyema, associated cerebral infarction and ventriculitis, were analyzed. Poor prognosis was associated with loss of consciousness, and hypodensity by CT scan at presentation (p < 0.005). Patients with an extensive subdural empyema will have a good outcome if they are treated early and aggressively with antibiotics and burrhole evacuation.
