This research discussed the effectiveness of learning English writing using the Student Teams-Ach... more This research discussed the effectiveness of learning English writing using the Student Teams-Achievement Divisions (STAD) and lecture-based learning method. The two methods were applied in two classes of second-year students, and they were given a writing test over one semester. The first class was using STAD and the second class with lecture-based learning. Around 80 students were classified into visual and auditory learning styles based on the questionnaires filled in. The results in the statistical analysis provide important insights into the learning achievement of both visual and auditory learners modeled by STAD. Using the STAD method, they have accomplished considerably higher scores on academic writing achievement than the students who are taught by lecture-based learning. Therefore, it brings a positive effect and association with the students’ learning styles.

Student-Teams Achievement Divisions (STAD) method is a method that provides more opportunities for students to discuss to their group freely. STAD method also extends student’s reading comprehension through reading task with their group. This research was quasi experiment and technique of sampling used simple random sampling. The population of the research was students of VIII class in SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Yogyakarta academic year 2016/2017. There were 2 classes that used in this research i.e. VIII D as control class and VIII C as experiment class. Linguistik terapan merupakan subdisiplin linguistik yang diarahkan pada tujuan praktis salah satu... more Linguistik terapan merupakan subdisiplin linguistik yang diarahkan pada tujuan praktis salah satunya yaitu dalam pengajaran bahasa. Berbagai problematika yang tidak dapat di pecahkan dalam pengajaran bahasa inggris, misalnya membutuhkan kajian linguistik terapan untuk menemukan solusi dari problematika tersebut. Saat ini, dalam dunia pengajaran para pendidik dan guru masih berorientasi pada metode-metode pengajaran terbaik khususnya 4 skill dalam bahasa inggris (reading, listening, speaking, and writing). Para pendidik dan guru masih beranggapan bahwa pengajaran yang sukses adalah yang mampu mengaplikasikan metode terbaik. Ini merupakan sesuatu yang masih di perdebatkan di kalangan dunia pengajaran. Artikel ini mengeksplor peran linguistik terapan (applied linguistics) di dalam pengajaran keterampilan membaca (reading). Dari sejumlah penelitian yang di lakukan oleh para ahli bahasa (linguist), maka dapat di simpulkan bahwa linguistik terapan memiliki peran penting dalam pengajaran reading, antara lain: metode pengajaran, materi, prinsip-prinsip pengajaran, serta perlakuan pengajaran yang di sesuaikan dengan kondisi siswa.
