El tratamiento de elección es la reparación quirúrgica precoz. Describimos el caso de un paciente con una hernia inguinoescrotal gigante que provocaba insuficiencia renal cuya reparación tardía no permitió la recuperación de la función renal.

The study of these substrates could contribute to a better understanding and management of these syndromes. In the present work. the cerebral perfusion correlates, as an indirect measure of the underlying neuronal function, of negative symptoms and parkinsonism were studied with single-photon emission tomography in a group of treatment-refractory paranoid schizophrenic patients. Perfusion ratios with respect to the homolateral cerebellum were compared with a normal database. Correlation coefficients were calculated between perfusion ratios. negative symptoms and parkinsonism scores on exploratory grounds. As a group. the patients showed a bilateral. but predominantly left-sided, hypofrontality and hypotemporality, as well as an increased perfusion in right basal ganglia. Negative symptoms scores negatively correlated with prefrontal perfusion, while parkinsonism positively correlated with the activlity of primary motor and sensory cortex. These findings support the existence of different cerebral substrates for primary and secondary negative symptoms in schizophrenia. 8 1997 Elsevier Science B.V.

Thirty-nine neuroleptic-refractory schizophrenic patients were studied with 99Tc-labeUed hexamethyl-propylene-aminoxime (HMPAO) and SPECT, while on classical neuroleptics and after 6 months of treatment with clozapine. The perfusion differences between responders and non-responders to clozapine were studied in the regions included within the dorsolateral and orbitofrontal fronto-striato-thalamic circuits, as well as the predictive value of these parameters. These values were compared to those of a normal database, and between both treatments within the two groups. On-neuroleptic perfusion in non-responders was lower in the thalamus, basal ganglia and dorsolateral prefrontal cortex. Thalamus and right prefrontal perfusion regions were selected as response predictors by a discriminant analysis. Thalamic and left basal ganglia activities while on neuroleptics were lower only in non-responders with respect to the normal subjects. Perfusion changes were only observed in the responder group in thalamus and basal ganglia. Study of regional perfusion may contribute to the prediction of clozapine response.

This expression continues to apply to tuberculosis (TB), a widespread infectious disease traced back to the earliest of centuries. TB has claimed its victims throughout much of known human history. Mycobacterium tuberculosis may have killed more persons than any other microbial pathogen and is one of the major causes of ill health and death worldwide. Although the overall incidence of TB has decreased, recently, the incidence of this disease appears to be increasing. Oral lesions of TB though uncommon are seen in both the primary and secondary stages of the disease. In secondary TB, the oral manifestations may be accompanied by lesions in the lungs, lymph nodes, or in any other part of the body and can be detected by a systemic examination. Most of the cases are secondary to pulmonary disease and the primary form is uncommon. Here, we present a case of primary oral TB, affecting the gingiva and hard palate in a 40-year-old Indian female patient.

The formation of complexes between soluble potato starch and three commercial alkyl polyglycoside... more The formation of complexes between soluble potato starch and three commercial alkyl polyglycosides has been studied by means of surface tension measurements at 37 • C. All surfactants assayed form complexes with starch, the quantity of bound surfactant being proportional to the amount of starch present in the solution. For all alkyl polyglycoside-starch systems tested, there is a direct proportional relationship between the bound and total surfactant concentrations, so that the formation of the surfactant-starch complex continues until the minimum surface tension is reached without detectable starch saturation prior to the occurrence of surfactant micelles. Binding isotherms and Scatchard plots support the idea that alkyl polyglycosides are bound to amylose by positive cooperative binding and to amylopectin by non-cooperative Langmuir-type binding.

Eleven derivatives of 1,1&amp... more Eleven derivatives of 1,1'-[1,2-ethylenebis(benzene-1,4-diylmethylene)]bis(4-pyridinium) dibromides bearing various groups at C-4 of the pyridinium moiety were synthesized and examined for their inhibition of choline kinase (ChoK) and antiproliferative activities. The C-4 substituents include electron-releasing, neutral or electron-withdrawing groups. A one-parameter regression equation has been derived which satisfactorily describes the ex vivo inhibitory potency of ChoK of the title compounds. The electronic effect plays a critical function in the ex vivo inhibition of ChoK although the role of electrostatic interactions could be altered due to a solvation process of both ChoK and ligands.

Two cases are reported with a flow cytometric study. Recurrent adenoma and its metastasis were aneuploid in one case.

It is classified in two groups: endemic Burkitt's lymphoma (African form), and non-endemic Burkitt's lymphoma (American form). The extranodal involvement of the head and neck in the American type is uncommon, so the diagnosis can be delayed. The authors present in this paper a case of American Burkitt's lymphoma in a patient with gingival hyperplasia, and compare the epidemiological, clinical, radiographic, therapeutic and prognostic characteristics of the endemic and non-endemic forms of Burkitt's lymphoma.

Two new fluoromanganates(III) of 1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethane (bpa) and trans-1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethyl... more Two new fluoromanganates(III) of 1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethane (bpa) and trans-1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethylene (bpe), LH(2)[MnF(4)(H(2)O)(2)](2) (L = bpa or bpe), have been prepared and their structure have been solved by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The [MnF(4)(H(2)O)(2)](-) anion displays an octahedral geometry with a strong Jahn-Teller tetragonal distortion along the H(2)O-Mn-OH(2) axis. The equatorial metal-ligand distances (Mn-F 1.827(1)-1.859(2) A) are shorter than the axial ones (Mn-O 2.203(2)-2.234(2) A). Three polarized absorption bands at 22,500, 18,300 and 14,500 cm(-1) are observed in the optical spectra of (bpaH(2))[MnF(4)(H(2)O)(2)](2). Finally, we present theoretical calculations on the equilibrium bond distances as well as the crystal-field electron structure using density functional methods. The calculated Mn-F bond distances (1.85 A) are in agreement with the experimental data but the obtained Mn-O distances (2.53-2.56 A) are higher than the experimental one as usually found in similar Jahn-Teller distorted systems. The calculated d-d transition energies are compared with experimental energies derived from the optical spectra. The variation of the HOMO energy and transition energies against the Mn-O distance is also shown.

This experimental study was carried out in 48 adult male Wistar rats. A simple right nephrectomy was performed in all rats. The rats were divided into two groups: one group was perfused with PGE1 and the other group with saline solution immediately after acute renal ischemia, which was produced by non-traumatic vascular clamping. The ischemia times were 15 and 60 minutes. The recovery period ranged from 24 hours to 7 days. After this period the animals were anesthetized and sacrificed. Histological and morphometric analyses of the right kidneys of the control group and the left kidneys of the study group were performed. The mortality was 31% (18.5% for the group perfused with PGE1 and 11.4% for the group perfused with saline solution). Kidneys of rats perfused with saline solution weighed more than the kidneys of rats perfused with PGE1 (1.771 +/- 0.455 and 1.55 +/- 0.34, ...
