Factors associated with clinical competency of nursing students

A critical priority and challenge in nursing education today is caused by the variability of the ... more A critical priority and challenge in nursing education today is caused by the variability of the healthcare environment. This systematic review reported findings on the independent variables that are associated with nursing students' clinical competency. A literature review search was conducted using Mendeley's website in 2023 with using keywords such as nursing clinical competency and nursing student. The Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool (MMAT) was used to appraise and describe the methodological quality. A narrative report was given on the synthesis of the results. Based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 16 papers were retained out of 1162 identified research publications. Among 16 papers, the common predictive factors mentioned in the reviewed articles on the clinical competency of nursing students include clinical learning environment, self-efficacy, and self-awareness. Other factors such as clinical training program, type of learning-teaching, learning experiences, and socio-demographics were involved as the significant variables toward clinical competency. There are several other characteristics or predictors of clinical competency that require further investigation.

Both preceptors and students have reported experiencing constrained relationships, tension, and anxiety, which led to failure results or frustrating experiences in clinical teaching and learning. The stratified sampling of 166 was invited. A cross-sectional design survey was used. The Nursing Clinical Teacher Effectiveness Inventory was used to collect data. The current study Cronbach’s Alpha Coefficient for all items was 0.945. The findings were given as effective clinical preceptorship had a moderate (3.02, .85). The interpersonal relationship (3.51, 0.88), evaluation (3.39, 0.93), personal traits (2.80, 0.83), nursing competencies (3.39, 0.93), and teaching ability (2.70, 0.81). in addition, nursing students perceived the effective clinical preceptors differently from university to another one, at least Chenla university was significantly different with International University (F = 3.505, p < 0.05); and different hospital were different perceptions (F=4.169, p<0.001). Conclusion, interpersonal relationship, formative evaluation, giving suggestions and correcting mistakes without belittling was perceived to be important characteristic. It is necessary to integrate clinical teaching skills into clinical preceptors.

The riverine floods from 2001 to 2002 have killed 62 and 26 people, respectively, and affected tens of thousands of people who were made homeless. During these times, nurses have been called upon to provide aid and care. They are first on the site to act as first responder, direct care provider, on-site coordinator of care, information provider or educator, mental health counselor, and triage officer. In 2013, there were 14 out of 24 provinces that were attached by floods. It took about 59% provinces that were affected by floods. About 377,356 households were affected and displaced households were 31,075. In additions, there were more than 1.7 million people affected by floods.

The journey of Cambodian nursing education is fulfilled by many challenges faced by nursing leaders in the country, including the challenges caused by the decades of civil war devastated Cambodian society. It takes high responsibility and needs more powers, skills, and commitments to produce competent professional nurses to fulfill the tasks in the clinical settings through nursing education, and it is characterized by the progress in responding societal needs of the society.

While pre-registration nursing education aims to prepare knowledgeable, competent practitioners. 1 Education models grounded in behaviourism have given way to those based on feminism, phenomenology and humanism. The humanistic curriculum models is based on the notion that the development of self-directed, confident professionals with well-developed communication skills is as important to the development of a beginning practitioner as the acquisition of psychomotor skills. 2 The clinical learning environment remains the single most important resource in the development of competent, capable, caring nurses. 2 Despite the need for effective clinical education, the criteria for determining effective clinical teaching remain poorly defined 3 and the role of the nurse teacher lacks clarity. 4 Clearly, there is urgent and compelling need to gain better understanding of what constitutes effective clinical teaching and to explore the impact of the clinical environment on student's learning. Preceptorship is important to nursing education for several reasons: it assists nursing students to incorporate theory into practice, integrates students into the practice setting within the organization, allows the student to apply learning and internalize the role and values of the profession within a nurturing and supportive relationship, and assists in recruiting nursing students into the profession. 5 ABSTRACT Background: Nursing education has evolved substantially in the last few decades. Building safe surgery knowledge and capacity in Cambodia: a mixed-methods evaluation of an innovative training and mentorship intervention

An evaluation study was conducted to assess the impact of SS2020 on intervention hospitals in Cambodia. Objective: To understand the impact of the SS2020 program on intervention hospitals in Cambodia by assessing the changes in key surgical performance indicators before and after the intervention, identifying key barriers and facilitators to adoption of learnings, and discovering lessons on the uptake and diffusion of this initiative in Cambodia and other similar contexts. Methods: This study is a convergent mixed-methods evaluation of a one-year multicomponent SS2020 intervention. Surgical observations were conducted in 8 intervention hospitals at baseline and endline to evaluate pre and post adherence to 20 safety, teamwork, and communication items. Fifteen focus groups were conducted in all intervention sites at endline to assess key facilitators and barriers to positive impact. Results: There was significant improvement in 19 of 20 indicators assessed during surgical observations. Among the highest performing indicators were safety items; among the lowest were communication items. Participants self-reported improved knowledge and positive behavior change after the intervention. Institutional change and direct patient impact were not widely reported. Most participants had favorable views of the mentorship model and were eager for the program to continue implementation. Conclusions: The results provide evidence that change in surgical ecosystems can be achieved on a short timeline with limited resources. The hub-and-spoke mentorship model can be successful in improving knowledge and changing behavior in surgical safety. Workforce development is important to improving surgical systems, but greater financial and human resources are needed. Ministry support in adopting, leading, and scaling is crucial to the continued success of safe surgery interventions in Cambodia.

The conceptual framework were modified from the Nurse Work Environment, Nurse Staffing, and Outcome Model and empirical studies. A multi-stage sampling was used for data collection, which conducted from October 2016 to April 2017. Three hundred and seventy five RNs represented twelve tertiary general hospitals were invited for the study. Behavioral conditions are frequently comorbid with NCD’s, contribute to poor clinical outcomes, and are under detected and untreated in many Asian nations. This article reports the findings of a study examining the level of behavioral and non-behavioral care integration in clinics and hospitals in China, Cambodia, Vietnam, and Thailand. It assessed providers’ ratings of patients’ prevalence of behavioral conditions, the need for behavioral health consultants, and patients’ self-reported health risk assessments (HRA) of their lifestyle and behavioral problems. Effect of nursing workplace empowering model on quality of nursing work life as perceived by professional nurses in a governmental hospital, Cambodia

Background: Nursing is experiencing an unprecedented shortage of skilled professionals as supply ... more Background: Nursing is experiencing an unprecedented shortage of skilled professionals as supply dwindles and demand escalates. For this reason, organizations are diligently trying to understand both what attracts nurses to a certain employer and what retains nurses in an organization. The purposes of this quasi-experimental design were to study the perceptive level of professional nurses and compare the pretest and posttest the use of nursing workplace empowering model on quality of nursing work life. Methods: The Quality of Nursing Work Life Scale was used with total reliability coefficient at = 0.843. Regarding to the study's model, the professional nurses of experimental group have been used for daily work. The Mann-Whitney tested for comparing the experimental group and control group. Moreover, the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test was used to compare the experimental group and control group and before and after implementing the nursing workplace empowering model. Results: The major findings indicated that the professional nurses who used NWEM were significantly higher scores than who did not use the NWEM at .05 level. In addition, the experimental group after implemented the NWEM was higher scores than before implementing NWEM at 0.05 level. Conclusions: The nurses' perceptions of structural and psychological empowerment are significantly increased flexibility, relaxation, free expression, and support. The structural and psychological empowerment had a direct effect on the all variables of the model.
